In our “Love Letters to Zooniverse” series we share wonderful stories from volunteers who have made Zooniverse a meaningful part of their lives, often contributing to projects and communities over many years. Here is one more, from Svetoslav Alexandrov, a 39-year-old molecular biologist and astrobiology researcher from Bulgaria. Since becoming an active Zooniverse volunteer in 2022, Svetoslav has contributed to discoveries across several astronomy projects, become a project moderator and scientific co-author, and even had an asteroid named after him.

This post was written by Hillary Burgess and Sam Blickhan. In June 2025, we announced an initiative to develop a set of recommendations for running AI/ML-engaged projects on the Zooniverse platform. After a year of collaboration and discussion with volunteers, experts in ethics, communications, AI, and participatory research, as well as Zooniverse project leads (noting that these groups are not mutually exclusive!), we are excited to finally share the results of this work.

As we celebrate 1 billion classifications on Zooniverse, we continue the "love letters" series - messages to our team from Zooniverse volunteers. The letters come from different continents, age groups and lifestyles, but they all invite us to stay curious as we do science together. Today's letter is from Daria, who participated in 67 projects, contributed almost 60,000 classifications and discovered 6 galaxies at age 16.

Amazing Chris! Thank you, and everyone who has worked on Zooniverse. It has transformed the way some science is done. My example: if you hear about the 'wettest/driest UK period in records that go back to 1836', that statement is only possible because of Zooniverse & #RainfallRescue volunteers. 👏👏
