🇨🇴 In 2014, oil spills off Tolú, Colombia left the Gulf of Morrosquillo covered in dead fish—a warning of the growing risks as offshore drilling expands across Latin America and the Caribbean. How do you prove who's responsible for pollution at sea?

🇵🇪 Illegal gold mining is transforming parts of the Peruvian Amazon. With support from Conservation X Labs, we worked with Peru's Servicio Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas por el Estado (SERNANP) to create Project Inambari—a free tool to detect gold mining activity using satellite imagery.
🏝️ Off the coast of Bintan, Indonesia, a 37-acre island resort overlooks one of the world's busiest shipping corridors, where tankers on global shipping routes pass just offshore. Protecting these waters is part of protecting the community that depends on them for the resort's founder, Andrew Dixon.
🌐 The environmental risks posed by aging shadow fleet tankers continue to draw global attention. A @reuters.com story, featured by U.S. News & World Report & picked up worldwide, examines an apparent oil leak from the sanctioned tanker Caroline Bezengi in a protected marine area off Oman's coast.
🌊 How much of the Mediterranean is actually protected? Not just on paper—but with management plans, strict protection, and real enforcement. Today, less than 1% is strictly protected. By 2030, we need 10% under strict protection and 30% effectively protected.
🇰🇪 One message came through loud and clear for SkyTruth Chief Impact Officer Mitchelle DeLeon at this year's #OurOcean Conference in Kenya: transparency matters. He reflects on his experience & SkyTruth's presence at this global gathering in our latest blog post: skytruth.org/blog/marking...
📥 ICYMI: our latest newsletter showcased our annual report, introduced our new, and highlighted recent events where we supported our partners and demonstrated how tools like #Cerulean can expand the scope of marine enforcement operations beyond fisheries into oil pollution monitoring 🇵🇦 🇨🇦
🗺️ In 2013, we launched FrackFinder, a crowdsourced project enlisting volunteers to map fracking well pads across Appalachia. Within 29 days, 233 volunteers completed nearly 90,000 image classifications, revealing how rapidly the region had been industrialized by fracking. The results were striking.

🗣️ @saynotolng.bsky.social is a global campaign working to debunk the myth that Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is a “climate-friendly” marine fuel alternative. SkyTruth partnered with the campaign in early 2024 to reveal the dangers of LNG emissions at sea.
🌊 Our ocean is a lifeline for millions around the world. We now have the tools, treaties, and momentum to protect it at scale, and @bloombergdotorg.bsky.social is investing $260M to turn that opportunity into action. Learn more: www.bloomberg.org/press/bloomb...

🪸 This week, the Wildlife Conservation Society released a new study at #OurOceanKenya that identifies coral reefs with the strongest chance at surviving the climate crisis — a bright spot of good climate news.
🇰🇪 As #OurOceanKenya is underway in Mombasa, we’re excited to share that new translations, including Swahili, are now available in both Cerulean and our 30x30 Progress Tracker! The additional translations support our ongoing goal to make our tools more accessible. 🔗 Links to both updates below 👇
🪸We’ve refreshed the coral layer in our 30x30 Progress Tracker to reflect data from a new study by the Wildlife Conservation Society and Macquarie University! The study provides a comprehensive picture of coral reef resilience globally.
🇰🇪 As #OOC11 kicks off in Mombasa, Kenya, we’re pleased to share that Swahili and Bahasa translations are now available in our 30x30 Progress Tracker and Conservation Builder, making it even more accessible to a broad range of users! 🔗 Learn more: skytruth.org/product-upda...
🪸 Known as the “Amazon of the Seas,” the #CoralTriangle is a critical marine biodiversity hotspot. As countries in Southeast Asia invest in liquified natural gas as a “clean” shipping fuel, new shipping routes and terminals pose a great pollution risk in this already-threatened region.
🌐 Access to Cerulean has expanded! Spanish, Portuguese, French, Swahili, and Indonesian translations are now available on the platform. Users can select their preferred language and immediately see it reflected on the platform and in exportable reports. See how: skytruth.org/product-upda...
🪸 RimbaWatch just released a new report, Reefs at Risk, which reveals that 97% of marine protected areas in #Malaysia are threatened by oil and gas projects. We are proud to have provided technical support for the work! 🔗 Check it out here: bit.ly/reefs-at-ris... #coral #CoralTriangle #pollution
🌊 In 2022, 196 countries committed to protect 30% of 🌏's land & ocean by 2030. 4 years later, we’re only at 10% of global marine protection. This #WorldOceanDay, urgent action is needed as 2030 draws near. SkyTruth’s 30x30 Progress Tracker is a step towards protection for critical marine habitats.
🤝 We're celebrating partnerships this #WorldEnvironmentDay! 🌍 Regional Greenpeace organizations recently partnered with us to conduct joint investigations using satellite imagery and analyses to examine local marine pollution from shipping and oil and gas activity.
🌊 We will be at #OurOceanConference in Mombasa, Kenya, two weeks from now! 👋 Connect with us there & follow #OurOceanKenya for updates from the conference. #OOC11

🛢️In March 2024, members of the British coast guard service spotted a 23-kilometer-long oil slick off the Scottish coastline. Their report detailed the vessel responsible—an aging tanker carrying around 1 million gallons of crude oil from Russia to a refinery in India. 👇
❓ #DYK data on fishing protection levels from our partner, Protected Seas, is available in our #30x30 Progress Tracker? It helps users of our platform understand where we are on marine protection worldwide - learn more in their new video: youtu.be/Hj3BRDqQkyU

🌿Happy #BiodiversityDay! 🦜 Every day, up to 150 species are lost. Now more than ever, organized local action is needed to make a global conservation impact. SkyTruth’s #30x30 Progress Tracker enables communities to do just that. 🔽
⛰ 25 years of exposing environmental issues. 25 impact stories to share in our #SkyTruth25for25 series! A partnership with regional nonprofit @appvoices.org revealed the impacts of mountaintop removal mining (MTM) across Central Appalachia. 🧵👇 #Geospatial #Mining
⛰️ Mountaintop mining alters landscapes by using explosives to blow apart ridge tops to expose the coal seams beneath, producing tons of rock that's dumped into neighboring valleys. It can be seen in this #timelapse of 4 decades of Landsat imagery, showing the impacts on a site in #WestVirginia.
