Quite. No, actually a bunch of people who agree with me are clowns and a bunch of people I viscerally disagree with are intelligent! And you should have worked this out by 20 at the latest!

the Russian Empire is already fallen; the Promethean sky will soon rise. when the year is bวngwว, there shall be prosperity under Heaven! he/him
The "let teenagers mutilate themselves" one is the way to unlock that they still can't get away from believing this tells us SOMETHING about gender.
Thereโs a specific tone and lane here thatโs abhorrent
I think one of the most dangerous things that has become normalised in the internet age is the idea that absolutely everything is everyone's business and we absolutely must place moral valence on the behaviour of everyone we hear about
I am fundamentally not interested in what Arday did or did not do and I think even participating in that discussion at this level of public uproar is helping the lynch mob.
ok fine. that was silly of GLP. doesnt change the fact that fundamentally the entire country, and now the world, should have never been discussing this story
since some people seem to think that no one was advocating for no professional disgrace.
let's be real: plagiarism scandals in academia happen all the time (not because academics plagiarize a lot, but just because of how many millions of faculty there are around the world) and it is never general-public news unless the culprit is a member of a minority.
The other thing of course is that a fairly probable cause for why some Americans are willing to accept insurrectionists being released from prison is because since 2000 democratic norms in general steadily atrophied in that country and a half-boiled frog won't notice suddenly becoming fully boiled
No but honestly while I do have empathy for /some/ forms of it (mainly from people who genuinely arent doing great, which is to say, Not Matt Yglesias) I do find "[x] is more important than the collapse of democracy" an inherently dangerous line of thought. If you're thinking this you're wrong.
I would actually say that a society that would kill its own literal freedom because they cannot be arsed going to a sexual harassment seminar for one hour once a year does not deserve to be free
As silly as the whole "the right has no cultural influence" argument is, the whole edifice is indeed a depressing look into the mind of a typical American swing voter
Something to be written about Mattyism, not as an electoral strategy, but as the vindication of the worst-possible interpretation of Tocqueville's views on American democracy; a society in which virtue is itself scorned and in which appealing to the lowest-common denominator is the only value.
As silly as the whole "the right has no cultural influence" argument is, the whole edifice is indeed a depressing look into the mind of a typical American swing voter
Gonna be real here lads I think if you find yourself calling people thugs for not agreeing with you that hounding someone to death for plagiarism is justified then you may in fact be saying that "thug" with a hard "n"
while we're bullying midwit takes on tuition fees, i find the notion of graduate taxes stylistically bizarre. you don't put up the taxes of anyone who uses the nhs more, why would you do that for someone using the education system more
i have hated sonia sodha ever since she ghostwrote the terrible, terrible, awful, no good argument against free tuition that Labour members love trotting out, long before she turned terf
@enclavedmicrostate.bsky.social yo your bio's description of your historical research sounds unbelievably interesting - do you have anything published on it that i could read?
My favourite bits of the Tanakh are the "and everyone clapped" parts
Genuinely so cool how every time someone has a deeply impractical and deranged definition of "authoritarianism" on this website they turn out to be vata. It's so good
yea mandatory drafts tend to happen when you're being invaded
'Accountability and personal responsibility for thee; complete freedom from consequences for me' - every hack in the country right now.
i think it's pretty deranged to use the word "authoritarian" for things that don't even literally involve throwing someone in jail, to be honest
i think for equal opportunity purposes we should give cofcas the exact same treatment and see how he takes it!
Does this seem like holding someone to account?
YES PIERRE WE GET IT YOU FEEL BAD FOR YOUR COUNTRY BEING IN THE TOP FIVE VILLAINS OF HISTORY. I REGRET TO INFORM YOU THAT LOUDLY ANNOUNCING YOU LOVE SPICE DOES NOT ABSOLVE YOU
can it be argued that Eastern European food is a subgenre of Chinese food
Thank You Mongol Empire
I think it's only acceptable to dislike Eastern European food if you're vegan, because fair fucks, then you are shit out of luck. But otherwise we objectively have some of the most flavourful cuisine in Europe
Everyone is still trying to come up with their hot, unique takes and I just keep thinking โa person is deadโ. An individual life, cut short. Thatโs the tragedy, thatโs the gross injustice. Why canโt we for once just sit with that.
One trivial "wow you got this wrong" with classic cyberpunk is that it severely underestimated how actually fucking annoying the megacorp overlords are
This is likely to provoke a fight these days but I think it's pretty obvious living beings have a soul.
Do you have any philosophical intuitions that seem extremely obvious to you, but are highly disagreed about? E.g. moral realism vs antirealism, separation of mind and matter, possibility of free will, objects being able to have moral standing, existence per se as a positive good for humans etc
No one, not a single person of note, is arguing that universities should not enforce rules against plagiarism. What we are pointing out is that it is insane and disproportionate for the attention of an entire country to move to one plagiarist until he kills himself.
The reactions to Ardays death show why this site is a bubble. Yes Cofcas is controversial but his accusations were substantiated by the guardian of all places. Arday was a publishing academic shown to be found wanting and as such should have been held accountable. That means by the press too.
So, kids, do we think we learned anything about the risks of overfocusing on one person stories?
