let's be real: plagiarism scandals in academia happen all the time (not because academics plagiarize a lot, but just because of how many millions of faculty there are around the world) and it is never general-public news unless the culprit is a member of a minority.
The other thing of course is that a fairly probable cause for why some Americans are willing to accept insurrectionists being released from prison is because since 2000 democratic norms in general steadily atrophied in that country and a half-boiled frog won't notice suddenly becoming fully boiled
No but honestly while I do have empathy for /some/ forms of it (mainly from people who genuinely arent doing great, which is to say, Not Matt Yglesias) I do find "[x] is more important than the collapse of democracy" an inherently dangerous line of thought. If you're thinking this you're wrong.

No one, not a single person of note, is arguing that universities should not enforce rules against plagiarism. What we are pointing out is that it is insane and disproportionate for the attention of an entire country to move to one plagiarist until he kills himself.
