My out of office is OFF. Dissertation has been submitted. A few words below. If your email was ignored over the past three months, this is why. I AM BACK!!!
Cindy Marcolina (she/her)
@cindymarcolina.bsky.social
Theatre critic + other things Member of the Critics' Circle (Drama) Dramaturg (MA) I only talk about theatre and Taylor Swift - 💌 cindymarcolina@gmail.com 👩🏻💻 https://linktr.ee/CindyMarcolina
Will they or won't they snog? That is the question. Review on @uk.broadwayworld.com embargoed until 00:01 on 3rd September 🎭🦷
The amount of contempt bordering on hatred that I've seen online in the past 20 hours bc Taylor isn’t marrying the person some people want is genuinely staggering. I thought my corner of fandom was a safe haven, but it's made me think twice about certain individuals. Big yikes.
Hiiiii I'm back three-starring national treasures 🤗
*** ‘It generates enough of a conversation to get you going, but is it Bartlett at his best? We don’t think so’: Juniper Blood at @donmarwarehouse.bsky.social
Not usually one to complain, but we experienced some appalling behaviour by the @donmarwarehouse.bsky.social FOH tonight.
The fourth season of Children Ruin Everything is finally on Netflix, so this is your reminder that it's one of the finest comedy series out there.
I really struggled with this (both watching it and writing about it).
** ‘It feels like the requirement for the play to be an active participant in many different conversations was put above the need for the material to be focused’: Make Me Feel at the Bush Theatre
This was cute! Excellent leads! A bit of a naive take and way too rushed, but it can get there! (No stars bc they're kids)
‘It’s not perfect, but there’s lots to commend. Mostly, it’s a splendid showcase for new homegrown talent’: Romeo & Juliet at @stratfordeast.com
I'm getting so fed up with @edfringe.bsky.social coverage this year. Unjustified ratings, stars thrown in for views, no reviews... what's going on?! Why are only three outlets doing it properly?!
I recently wrote this piece starnow.com/uk/magazine/ar… about starting out in the industry. It turns out @stratfordeast.com also has a youth scheme that you can join if you live in Newham!
Did something different last night and went to my first k-pop concert! Though I have a BTS superfan as a bestie I wasn't entirely familiar with their game. Five stars from me for Jin, no notes whatsoever. I didn't know any songs but had such a good time! #RUNSEOKJIN_epTOUR_UK
Say what you want about Six, but the songs hit so hard. "You say it's a pity 'cause, quoting Leviticus / I'll end up kiddy-less all my life" is insane scansion.
Now that the Fringe is in full swing, let's remember that a review is different from a reaction.
A repeat visit to Sing Street? It must be good! (Here's my ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review from a few weeks back www.broadwayworld.com/westend/arti...)
The longer I am on hinge the more firmly I believe that the male loneliness epidemic is self-imposed. Like, what do you mean it doesn't come naturally to you to ask me one question after I asked you two consecutive ones? All it takes is "you?" FML fr
Just out of Burlesque and I feel like I need a cleanse.
I can't remember the last time I five-starred a musical.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ‘A tonic for a broken world’: Sing Street at @lyrichammersmith.bsky.social
I've been having this thought recently that you could apply the dead internet theory to commercial theatre to some extent with a lot of caveats. Might need to write about this at some point but I'm consumed by other stuff atm.
Here we go again. Did I con myself into buying merch? Maybe.
Visit one of two this week (very random coincidence, even though I *finally* physically started writing my dissertation after a month of straight research).
Regularly, the theatre community gets a topic everybody feels the burning need to speak about, regardless of how educated the individuals are about it, simply bc it's the cool thing. Recent examples? The balcony scene, West End live. Two more days of the latter, then we move on.
I'm nearly done with We Were Liars and I have thoughts. 1) I don't remember the book being so boring and slow; 2) some parts are either written by AI or by picking cliché lines nobody would ever say out of a jar; 3) a few nepo babies get away with it bc they're actually good.
This is cute! A hearty ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ even though I don’t condone its veiled misogyny.
**** ‘Uplifting and genuinely funny even when you consider its tinge of misogyny’: Lovestruck at @stratfordeast.com
Different crowd today. Stiff and unresponsive.
This was obvs so much fun, so here's a play-by-play report on what happened instead of a review.
‘Hopefully this won’t be a one-off for the performer’: Hadley Fraser took the stage at Cadogan Hall for a rare one-off concert
