However, today’s conditions underscore the importance of all parties upholding their agreements and ensuring operations take place in a safe and dignified manner. We condemn the attacks that left many civilians in North Kivu wounded or dead.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is alarmed by the devastating impact on the civilian population of ongoing armed clashes in and around Goma.

Of special concern is the massive influx of people wounded by firearms and explosive weapons into
ICRC-supported facilities, in particular the CBCA
Ndosho Hospital in Goma.

Today, we facilitated the release and transfer of four hostages out of Gaza and to Israeli authorities. We also facilitated the release and transfer of 128 detainees from Israeli places of detention to Gaza and the West Bank in the second phase of an ongoing humanitarian operation. During these releases, our priority is the safe transfer of those involved. This is a responsibility we take extremely seriously.

Today, on the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz’s liberation, we honor the millions who suffered and perished in the Holocaust.

For over 1.5 million people—mostly Jews—Auschwitz was the end of an unimaginable ordeal.

For the International Committee of the Red Cross,
it marks its greatest failure in its history, a failure to speak out and protect the millions of people who were subjected to Nazi persecution and genocide.

As we reflect on this solemn day, let us renew our commitment to preserve the memory of Holocaust victims and survivors and to be steadfast in building a world where the dignity and humanity of every individual are not only recognized but fiercely defended—without exception, without hesitation, and without compromise.
