#OtD 9 Sep 1934 over 100k Londoners flooded Hyde Park to protest a rally by fascist leader Oswald Mosley. Mostly was drowned out by the anti-fascist locals, who then chased the police-protected Nazis out of the park. More about the fight in the 40s: workingclasshistory.com/2020/02/17/e...
This but constantly seeking feasible alternative English translations for liegen/legen, sitzen/setzen, stehen/stellen.
I write for a living and I do everything I can to avoid using “lay / lie.” It’s just too much pressure.
Update on the ska’n’b band project: we found women on sax and trombone and I am allowed to be the manager. I am taking way too many snacks to the first rehearsal.
The AfD’s victory was principally a mobilisation surge. The extraordinary increase in turnout - from 60.3% to around 76.5% was overwhelmingly advantageous to the AfD. People who had withdrawn from politics did not return to defend the centre; they returned to punish it
The demographic which voted the least for the AfD was socialized entirely in the GDR, the highest share at 53% (35-44) were children or infants when the wall came down and 42% of those born in the 21st century voted for them.

We had a very detailed conversation about dashes in 19th-C German prose and contemporary writing at our translation lab tonight, and reached no conclusions. Also: whether to excise racism in historical texts during translation. All part of the delight of hanging with translators.
My last shout for V&Q Books, the anthology I always wanted to exist. Out today in UK, Ireland, DACH.

Ok now I’m ready to send out my story by post. Message me your address if you want one. I bought fun stamps (not pictured). It’s a sweet love story set in the 90s.

Your reminder that the English Beat icon "Beat Girl" is a transgender woman named Brigitte Bond from a photo of her dancing with ska musician Prince Buster at Heathrow in 1964 and none of us will be as cool as she was.
People who don’t know the difference between ‘entomology’ and ‘etymology’ bug us in ways we cannot put into words.
Re: last thread: I’m curious about Svenja Leiber’s novel NELKA, about Polish forced labourers in Nazi Germany and Germans taking credit for their work.
I’ve been thinking a lot about forced labour in Nazi Germany and how people looked away. Half a million people had to perform slave labour in Berlin alone. This map shows how impossible it must have been to overlook. The sheer density in workplaces. www.ns-zwangsarbeit.de/recherche/la...

The problem now is, if we go back in time our phones won’t work but we won’t have an almanac in our knapsack to predict the forthcoming eclipse and get ourselves out of trouble. Like, I’ve never even seen an almanac in real life because I have a smartphone.
If I go to a line dance class in Weissensee, will you all come with me?
The longlist for the German Book Prize #dbp26 looks very interesting. A wide range in its 18 titles, a couple of debut novels, couple of established old men, lots of German history as per usual, but several more international perspectives. www.deutscher-buchpreis.de/en/nominated...

Oh, the sweet relief of admitting I’m not the right reader for a book I said I’d write a report on. Freeing myself to read something I *might* appreciate!
I wanted to do more things amateurishly this year, in a good way. So I wrote this short story, which will be published in 3:AM next month. And now I’ve made it into a little zine to send out by post. Should I wait until after the online publication?
I unabashedly 🧡 Berlin-Mitte. Yesterday I strolled down the road behind Sven Marquardt, today I fangirled Elif Eralp. My life of political glamour is complete.
Make mine an alcohol-free Martini Vibrante and Oleada Fizzy-Blanc spritz…
Bummer. I’m off alcohol for three months, including my big anthology launch and the Frankfurt Book Fair. I will think of wholesome ways to celebrate things, but first I’m having a brief sulk.
