J.D. nails it. We’ve basically been living in successive iterations of the basic ethos of this for the past 45 years in the US, but it feels more like a deliberate hollowing and segregation into permanent wealth vs permanent hustling more now than it has in a century.

The experience of the rebooted Gilded Age is hard to get a systematic handle on. How can everything carry premium/designer/elite/platinum pricing? How does that feel? Here are three versions of what I've been thinking of as luxury offgassing. 1. Airlines race to premium (Delta CEO to WSJ)

Delta CEO explaining to WSJ about premium creep
WSJ: Are there any segments of consumers where you are seeing any resistance to higher fares? Are there people out there who are kind of throwing in the towel?

BASTIAN: I wouldn’t say throwing in the towel, but those at the lower end of the economic curve are going to be the most sensitive, and that’s why we reduced our supply offering in that market.

Loving the field trips in this conference in Detroit. Seeing lots of incredible art and design endeavors and schools that I wouldn’t have bundled otherwise. And tomorrow morning: jazz, Motown, and techno. 🎶

Great Rushfield analysis, with receipts, of the film side of Skydance on day one. TLDR (or “DR, I don’t subscribe to the Ankler”): Mike & Pam’s record was great actually, treat your talent well, walk the talk, and there are no such things as “mergers.” theankler.com/skydances-or...

Skydance's Original(s) Sin: Firing Its Hitmakers - The Ankler

The rap on Mike & Pam? They spent too freely on movies that weren't 'Transformers.' The slate tells a very different story

Outside the box idea for Disney, NBCU, or (sigh) Skydance: bring back standalone made-for-TV movies. The industry needs more feature-length proving grounds for young talent, and these could be done cheaply and repurposed from network to streamer and back (and vice versa).

We’re doing exactly what we thought we’d be doing in the 21st century: staring most of the day at a pocket computer that makes us angry and anxious. We’re living the dream.

An annoying but also fascinating academic thing is long-term faculty and staffers having reflex assumptions, reactions, and suspicions stemming from how things were run several department chairs, Deans, or Provosts ago. Gothic horror, only the ghost is some Dean from 1997.

My new campus hero is the kid who wears the all-white suit every day (complete with white headphones and tennis shoes) who smells faintly of clove cigarettes. He’s like his own 2000s “The” band or a self-contained Wes Anderson protagonist.

Wait, people think there are still inescapable pop songs in this era of algorithm-delivered pop culture? 🤔 (Speaking as a Texan who only listens to Bandcamp, NTS, and his own Plex library and was not aware of (and still haven’t heard) something called “Choosing Texas” until this morning.)

If you’re looking for a slightly off-the-radar show on that list with some amazing women characters and performances, I’ll put in a pitch for Andor, if you haven’t yet seen it.
