I think one of the hardest elements to get across in any article on James Connolly and the British army will be that the story of his enlistment in the King's Liverpool is based on little more than Captain Robert Monteith picking it because one of its volunteer regiments wore kilts.

In National Archives Kew and found John Connolly ("James Reid"), brother of James, in the muster rolls of the Border Regiment, 1881. His army recruitment file hasn't survived but it appears from when he moved battalions that he enlisted around July 1880, when he was eighteen.
