When daylight fails and night approaches, 'They' return... The 1928 first edition of H R Wakefield's first ghost story collection, another entrant for book cover of the day and another book I might possibly commit murder for (of which there is a shocking number). #WyrdWednesday #BookChatWeekly
Located at the bottom of my adjacent road, on my way to the local supermarket. #graffiti #frankensteinsmonster #invisibleman @universalmonsters.bsky.social
The Monstrous Goat by Frank C Pape. It's no good, I can't help it, I just love this picture. #31DaysOfHalloween #devil #sorcery #weirdart #art
NOSFERATU is close to the Greek word 'nosforos', meaning ‘plague bearer’. In the film the #vampire has his teeth set at the front of his mouth like the plague rats he brings in his wake. Vampirism & plague are symbolically combined in the metaphor of vermin characterised by RATS #31DaysofHalloween
I shall join with Nina and Rachel with a Book Cover Of the Day. How about this classic Sidney Sime dust jacket for Arthur Machen's 'House Of Souls', 1906? #ArthurMachen #Machen #weirdfiction #BookChatWeekly #booksky
An enjoyable Saturday night, despite the continued rainfall, seeing an anthology of creepy and ghostly tales by M.R. James. Many thanks to London Month of the Dead for hosting this event and Midnight Circle Productions for their performance and production.
First event by Concrete Atlantis, titled The Megalithic Imperative: 3rd Stone Anthology book launch and live music from Urthona @markopilkington.bsky.social Insightful and enjoyable, especially engaging conversations with like-minded people. #stonecircles #earthmysteries #hauntology #folklore
A perfect Saturday morning exploring St. Mary's Crypt and Churchyard with expert and historian James Paterson, part of London Month of the Dead. Also included was someone's disemboweled heart kept inside a jar (photo 9). #crypt #gothiclocation #graveyard #churchesofinstagram #churchyard
Great lecture and book signing from Paul Gambino. #victoriandeath #deathculture #victoriangothic #victoriantimes
VAMPIRES: TWO CENTURIES OF GREAT VAMPIRE STORIES Doubleday 1987 ed. Alan Ryan. Edward Gorey cover. In the pages of this treasured book in all their glory, are some of the great #vampires in literature, male & female, invisible & metaphoric, doomed & daring! #31DaysOfHalloween
Another glorious bit of Gothic. This is Rheims Cathedral painted by David Roberts in the early 19th Century. Droolworthy. #Gothic #medieval #Rheims #church #architecture

Random night shots of Walthamstow Village last night.
An enjoyable and insightful talk by Freudian expert and horror film theorist @psycstar.bsky.social taking us on a psychoanalytic journey through horror cinema, discussing legendary titles. #sigmundefreud #theuncanny #psychoanalysis #abjectart #jacqueslacan
A fascinating talk by the brilliant and wonderful Madeleine LeDespencer about the history of the Grand Guignol, including its culture and influence on today's horror cinema. Also the talk covered Poe's influence and its origins. #grandguignol #frenchgothic #horrortheatre
I've posted this before but I'm going to post it again because it didn't get much love on that inferior Friday thing. An example of the spooky penny broadsheets sold in the early 1800s. They never seemed to learn that a picture tells a 1000 words, thereby making a 1000 words redundant. #SpookySunday

A THIN #GHOST Is one of my favourite book titles. The original decorative cloth cover with spider's web design published by Edward Arnold in 1919 is as ghoulishly good as M. R. James's writing. A #gothic gem of a book #SpookySunday #Booksky #31daysofHalloween
WITCHY CAT NAMES PYEWACKET is the name of a witch's familiar found by witchfinder general Matthew Hopkins, 1644. GRIMALKIN another witchy name derives from 'grim' grey, 'malkin', a hare or spinster; Graymalkin is the witches' familiar in Shakespeare's Macbeth #FolkloreSunday #31daysofHalloween
A brilliant and well researched talk by @jendeavour.bsky.social on grief and terror in Victorian child bereavement that engaged the audience. #victorian #victorianstudies
Four Gothic 'blue covers' or 'shilling shockers' reproduced in Peter Haining's 'A Pictorial History of Horror Stories'. #BookWormSat #Gothic #Gothtober #31DaysOfHalloween
Fantastic evening at Brompton Cemetery 🪦 for Memory, Murder and Metamorphosis. A concert that explores love, memory and mortality through three masterpieces of string quartet repertoire from The Idalia Quartet. Finally, I want to thank London Month of the Dead for hosting this great event.
The grave of actor Ernest Thesiger, who played the iconic Doctor Septimus Pretorius in The Bride of Frankenstein, lies in a large family plot with his parents. #thebrideoffrankenstein #doctorseptimuspretorius #ernestthesiger #horroricon

Wow. Denholm Elliott and Hazel Court in an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, season 3 (1958). Had no idea he’d appeared in an American production so early on.
