Mail’s here - three boxes of Atari history sent to me to scan 

Remembering those who lost their lives after the attacks on the World Trade Centre in 2001. I recall watching the events of that day unfold in total disbelief. I recently visited the Imperial War Museum North (Manchester) where they had a steel window section from the North tower. Profoundly moving.

My BBC Micro and Acorn Electron shoot 'em up 'Galaforce' is 40 years old this month. I was 19 when I started creating the game with help from former school friends Paul Proctor ( Artwork ) and Martin Galway ( Music /SFX ). I went to Superior Software in early 1986 and they agreed to publish the game

NES Solstice had the working title 'Dark Child'. Whilst going through my old development disks I came across some early source code for a demo of the game. I managed to get it to assemble and here is what I found! Yes it's very glitchy. I had to do a lot of hackery to get this to even run!

Listening to Jean Michel Jarre to take me back to the 80s whilst I do mundane office sorting! I often programmed with his music blaring out in the background back in the day. Subtitles do seem rather pointless for instrumental music...

I was never lucky enough to own one of these 'desktop' arcade game clones. I remember being really impressed with Astro Wars, probably because I loved Galaxians!

This was my 1980s music streaming device. Skipping tracks and changing albums was a slow process - we had a lot more patience back then.

I ordered this T-shirt a few weeks ago and it arrived today. I can't even remember where I got it from, even after trawling through my emails. One of my typical impulse purchases. I think this design was worn by Commodore staff at an early computer show when the PET was shown for the first time.

So what type of media was used by the first game you can remember playing? Was it a cartridge, cassette tape, floppy disk, optical disk ( CD-ROM, DVD or BluRay ) or other. Also, what was the game and do you still play it today?

We will end up losing everything digital if it continues this way. Books, games, films, music, animation, art, TV will be lost along with all other digital content that is slowly being taken away from us. You pay a license fee to access content under very strict terms that are not in your favour.

Another fun day out with my family. This time we went on a tour around Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium. Not an easy one for me, being a City fan, but everyone else supports United! A very informative tour that I would recommend to any football fan. The Etihad stadium is next!

We went on a short River cruise in Manchester recently - up the Irwell from the Media City area. A pleasent hour on the water giving a great view of the city and its history. The Mark Addy pub was the turning point for the trip. The Addy flooded back in 2013 and the pub has been shut since then.

SabreMan / Wulf artwork for the BBC Micro version of Knight Lore. Found on Paul Proctor's original development disks. I believe some of the Spectrum animation frames were removed to save memory as the BBC Micro only has 32K RAM vs the Spectrum's 48K RAM.

Wow! Two small manuals that shipped with the Acorn ARM Evaluation System 2nd Processor just sold for £253! That's not a full set of manuals either. I was guessing they might hit around £50. BBC BASIC and TWIN ( text editor ) software were both written by Sophie Wilson...just missing her signature!

A couple of photos I took of Jamie Urquhart's presentation at Steve Furber's ( SBF ) Festschrift at Manchester University. I rather enjoyed the story aboout the lost ARM simulation BASIC program that was re-constructed from a print-out using OCR and then manually fixed by Sophie Wilson. RIP Jamie.

Sad to hear that Jamie Urquhart has passed away. He managed the VLSI team at Acorn that created ARM1 and its support ICs and later co-founded ARM. I chatted with him at Steve Furber's Festschrift at Manchester University and he had so many wonderful stories about his time at Acorn and ARM. RIP Jamie

We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Jamie Urquhart. We were honoured to welcome Jamie to our ARM1 at 40 celebrations last year. Here he reflects on his early interest in electronics. Our thoughts remain with his family, friends, and all who knew him.

Wow, another BBC Micro portable/luggable has popped up on ebay. There was another one sold a good few months back. Very rare item - not too sure how many were actually made. You need strong arms for this one!
