15,000 jobs axed, 1000s of courses cut, campuses closing, whole academic disciplines disappearing.   Calling this a crisis isn't "bashing things that we're good at", it's raising the alarm.   UUK needs to get real, stop making cuts & start working with us to protect provision.

Some positive news in this morning's trade union stats. Membership up to 6.57 million, its highest since 2020. Public sector trade union membership at its highest level since 2010 (4.0 million). Stats are for 2025, so before the new trade union rights in the Employment Rights Act came into effect.

You've got to ask yourself why this entire cohort of senior managers is so gullible they're throwing this amount of money away. Some respect for staff expertise would be nice. Some understanding of how leadership works as well. Instead, they're all paying big figures for generic powerpoints

Scrap merchants. Australian management consultancy Nous, which promises to help universities define the pathway forward for budget model change, has been picking up plenty of lucrative work in the struggling UK higher education sector this year. Having been involved in controversial restructurings at Australian and Canadian universities, Eye 1659 notes last year that the company was one of several being paid thousands of pounds for management advice by de Montfort University (which has its own business school chock full of people who teach postgraduate-level management). Since thenNous is known to have advised the university of Edinburgh on academic efficiency opportunities, carried out a portfolio review at QMUL and been involved in the hunt for savings atpartsmoith, Plymouth, and Derby universities. Information released by Cardiff university, in response to a freedom of information request from UCU revealed the university has paid more than £1 million to Nous in the last couple of years much of it for transformationsupport

We rarely shout about our successes but we can confirm that over 100 colleagues working in certain roles in the Library and Tech Services will be re-graded as of 1 July 💪🏻 This is a significant achievement for our pay campaign but we continue to support other colleagues with grades and workload 🤝

UNISON WIN! 102 staff at Manchester Metropolitan University re-graded. Following a long campaign, more than a hundred staff at the university will now be paid at a grade that better represents their hard work.

I met Bridget Philipson yesterday alongside Ivan Bonsell of our Higher Education Service Group and @drjogrady.bsky.social of the UCU. We raised the funding crisis facing our universities, which is threatening the livelihoods of our members, and made the case for a comprehensive solution.

So the £85million+ spent (aka 'wasted') on a completely failed new city campus has dropped off this news altogether. This disaster was defended repeatedly in Senate by the VC who is now 'excited' by the opportunities presented by ending the careers of 100s of staff. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
