How can we study life’s deep evolutionary past? By bringing it into the lab! This @asm.org feature highlights our on-going efforts. Read how synthetic biology allows us to reconstruct ancient microbial systems, test hypotheses about early metabolism and explore how life and Earth co-evolved. 🌍

Synthetic biology is advancing how scientists study early microbial life. Their findings could revolutionize how we think about Earth’s earliest residents—and those that exist today. asm.org/articles/202...

🙋🏾‍♀️I am honored to have been supported by @hypothesisfund.bsky.social and can attest that they intentionally select their awardees. There is incredible representation at the scout level as well. Have nothing but good things to say about HF leadership - there is always improvement but the bar is high!

Folks quick to dump on the fact that latest group of amazing @hypothesisfund.bsky.social awardees are all men (n=5) are encouraged to check out the list of all recent awardees to celebrate all their achievements: www.hypothesisfund.org/portfolio

1/ Mitochondrial Na⁺ links metabolism, Ca2+ signaling and disease. We know how it gets in, how it gets out, and proteins that use it. But: we've never actually seen Na⁺ in single mitochondria in live cells. We started with an unusual observation, went down a rabbit hole & found some cool biology .

A mitochondrion showing Ca2+ entering through the MCU, exchanged for Na+ by NCLX, Complex I acting as a Na+/H+ exchanger, and various transporters that use Na+ to move their substrates in and out of the mitochondria

Katalin Karikó's inspiring story captures the power of persisting against all odds -- a timely reminder for us in science. We're proud to have produced this winning episode, in partnership w/ @scifri.bsky.social. Stories like hers are at the ❤️ of why we support early-stage, unconventional science.

We’re honored to have won a First Place award from the Public Media Journalists Association for "The Leap: I Was Considered A Nobody." www.pmja.org/pmja-2026-aw... "The Leap" is a production of the Hypothesis Fund @hypothesisfund.bsky.social, in partnership with Science Friday.

The @hypothesisfund.bsky.social has awarded a prestigious seed grant to @uofubiology.bsky.social professor Talia Karasov, who researches the microbial weapons bacteria inflict on each other in an evolutionary arms race that might hold the keys to addressing the threat of antibiotic resistance.

U biologist wins seed grant to deepen research into tailocins, the weapons microbes use on each other - @theU

Hypothesis Fund supports early-stage innovative research that aims to improve the health of people and the planet.
