SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY: Once Holland hurt himself doing his own stunts, I knew Destin would cook, and man what a meal. Undeniably the best-looking (and feeling) MCU Spidey flick yet, despite occasionally contending with its own intentions. My review:
'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Review: Tom Holland's Most Mature Spidey Adventure Swings Back to Basics
By trading multiversal chaos for personal stakes, Brand New Day spins Holland's strongest and most heartfelt Spider-Man outing yet.

This is a painful truth many film freelancers face and little discuss on main. I haven't pitched to Vulture since the one, and only one, article I did in 2022 for the editor there ghosted me, frequently. He's far from the only one and it's more frequent than ever. Pay Jason!
Well, it’s invoicing day, and since they’re really apparently not going to pay me for something I wrote for them two months ago, I guess today is the day to post about how @vulture.com fucks over its film freelancers. Long (sorry) thread, with receipts:
For @denofgeek.bsky.social SDCC print issue (my first print piece!), I talked with co-writers/directors/best friends Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado to give you an exclusive glimpse on DreamWorks' striking and moving upcoming buddy comedy FORGOTTEN ISLAND. www.denofgeek.com/movies/forgo...

Malia Pyles as Neveah Valentine put the fear of God in me in CAPE FEAR. I had to chat with her about building the original character made for the Apple TV+'s iteration from the ground up, becoming a new kind of femme fatale, and, uh, that twist. My latest for Joysauce:
Malia Pyles is a new kind of femme fatale in 'Cape Fear'
She shares the film inspirations, emotional discoveries, and on-set collaboration that shaped her captivating performance in the miniseries.

Matt Johnson's TONY is proof that you don’t need to change a great old recipe to deliver a delicious dish. Conventional, cozy, coming-of-age flick first. Anthony Bourdain origin flick second. Makes me want a lobster roll real bad. My review: www.rendyreviews.com/movie-review...
'Tony' Review: A Soulful Anthony Bourdain Coming-of-Age Story with Plenty of Heart
Sincere, cozy, warm, and anchored by a winning Dominic Sessa performance, Matt Johnson’s Tony is proof that you don’t need to change a great old recipe to deliver a delicious dish.

It brings me no joy to share that Kore-eda’s streak hits a “404 error” with SHEEP IN THE BOX — a disappointingly tone-deaf and overly sentimental sci-fi drama about a family that gets a humanoid son to replace their dead one. At least there's LOOK BACK soon. www.rendyreviews.com/movie-review...
'Sheep in the Box' Review: Hirokazu Kore-eda Hits a 404 Error With a Cloying Sci-Fi Melodrama
A huge miss for Kore-eda, Sheep in the Box is a tone-deaf, drab, and hollow family melodrama that desperately needs humanistic realism to balance its cloying, sentimental phoniness.

THE INVITE's set design details all the cracks in Joe and Angela’s bond, from countless picture frames to cluttered bookshelves across each corner. For RR Members, I spoke to production designer Jade Healy about turning the troubled couple's apartment into the film's quietest character. Read here:
How 'The Invite' Production Designer Jade Healy Made an Apartment the Real Star of Olivia Wilde's Marriage Story

Oh my GOD(s), I loved THE ODYSSEY. It sprints with the baton handed off from OPPENHEIMER via a searing critique of the male psyche. Introspective, poignant, epic, and truly awe-inspiring. It's among his best work since INTERSTELLAR. More in my review: www.rendyreviews.com/movie-review...
'The Odyssey' Review: Christopher Nolan Defies Modern Blockbuster Norms With His Most Soulful Epic Yet
An introspective, poignant, and unfathomably epic that transforms Homer's myth into Christopher Nolan's most emotionally resonant film yet.

Filed at 1768 words.....damn it Nolan. Got me going as long as your movie. Hope to the GODS (my editor) trims it nice enough whilst the review encapsulates my unwavering love for it. See you tomorrow
I think the Odyssey might be the final boss of internet reactionary brain rot. It is baffling to me that more media channels aren't calling out the anti-Black racism and sexism and transphobia and everything going on with this film, regardless of whether the film is any good or not.
GAIL DAUGHTRY AND THE CELEBRITY SEX PASS is so gloriously stupid (complimentary). David Wain and Ken Marino made the best Wizard of Oz movie of the decade and the funniest comedy of the summer. John Slattery MVP. I might finally watch MAD MEN now. www.rendyreviews.com/movie-review...
‘Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass’ Review: We’re Off to Hump the Wizard
David Wain’s Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is a hilarious Wizard of Oz riff, reviving the joyful absurdity and rapid-fire comedy modern theaters desperately need.

SUPERGIRL may be the DCU's second entry and it crashes like an early-DCEU relic — slap-dab between BvS and Suicide Squad. Drab, ugly, misdirected, poorly written. It's a space-western that nerfs its lead and makes her more concerned with her dog than trafficked children. YUP, that's my Supergirl!
‘Supergirl’ Review: A Woman of Tomorrow Trapped in Yesterday’s Superhero Movie
Milly Alcock proves she’s a worthy Supergirl, but this dull adaptation grounds Kara before she can soar, trading heart and heroism for generic blockbuster grit.
