Question: when can we start using “fin de siècle” to describe the end of the 20th century?

Had a weird conversation today. Passed a foundational text to someone in a PhD program who was looking for advice. Someone overheard, asked why that title was important. It sounded like X, which was their research. It is X. It’s fundamental to X. You’re stupid. I know what your “PhD” is worth.

There is a thing about the military life, and the lives around it. When there are tragedies…we’re not there. The blame feels harder. What we “should” have done is easier to access…because we “should” have been there. Fucking heartbroken. Heart. Broken. Again. Fuck.

My suggestion? Don’t join them. This is self-serving snake-oil, with self-published nonsense in support.
“Never trust an observation unless it’s backed up by a theory.” —Neil deGrasse Tyson I keep trying to teach this idea, that the universe of observations and a causal logic matter more than the anecdotes we collect like Lenny thinking bunnies just, like, stop breathing.
I’ve been surprised and delighted. Of the 76 (yes, I’m counting) titles I’ve put out for students and faculty, they appear to be going to people who want them.
Funny that beginning the cull of my shelves at work makes retirement (still months away!) feel more real than orders did. The first 50(ish) titles going on the “free to a good home” shelf.
I have a thought about @mls.bsky.social. The real difference between this & other leagues (with exceptions and on average) is not the players. It’s the officiating clown show, with @proreferees.bsky.social the lead clown. Many MLS players would survive in other leagues…none of our officials would.

Jumping Jesus Christ on a pogo stick. No reputable study shows “vaccine injury” to be anything but vanishingly small…and accommodated in the public health recommendations for vaccination schedules. He’s a crank, a conspiracist, and without any evidence to support his rejection of…well…science.
RFK Jr: "We care about every child who dies from measles. They get headlines. We should care about the children who are dying or suffering or being injured by vaccine injuries."
Knowable & known problems w/well-defined requirements for decades prior to this imbroglio. The Army, Air Force, Navy, etc., could not at any point get out of their own way. I’ve said for years that we need our own Jena-Auerstedt. Maybe this is it, at lower cost than Prussia paid. Fools learning.

Other than “use the Oxford comma and two spaces after a period,” I have one piece of consistent advice: If you can, call your Dad. “There’s a train leaving nightly called when all is said and done. Keep me in your heart for a while.” m.youtube.com/watch?v=RMTK...

I’ve got $1 that says the admin does it anyway. The history here is one of general disregard for judicial orders.

That’s just dust in my eye. I’m not crying. You’re crying, loser. Good on ya, @hoosierhomer.bsky.social.
Truly an incredible feeling when you call a client, say you have good news, & their response is to sigh heavily and say "Oh thank God." He is getting hundreds of thousands of medical bills paid for, future medical care, back pay & pay until he heals up. I feel so good after that conversation.
It’s annoying to have to point this out: 18 U.S. Code § 597 - Expenditures to influence voting www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/...
All our prayers are answered. Sometimes the answer is, “No.” A think I feel compelled to remind people of with alarming frequency.

I did this first—a poem a day, working through a collection—a few years ago with Dickinson’s collected poems. (Embedded in the linked thread.) After that, I decided to take a run at something different. Now? C’est fini. Not sure what’s next.
I think I’ll start another little project. I have a marvelous anthology of modern poetry, the product of a misspent college degree. (I kid!) Maybe (a piece of) one poem from every featured poet.
I’m telling you. If you’re of an age, these pocket reviews are glorious. If you’re not of an age? Still glorious.
And we're off, with MOVIE NO. 78 in our chronological tour through the American movies of the 1980s; and this one's a keystone moment in yet another important channel of 80s comedy, both more and less than post-1st gen SNL. From July 1980, it's....CADDYSHACK!
Oh my. What a memory. I haven’t seen this film in decades—since before I commissioned—and I need to remedy that.
And we're off, with MOVIE NO. 77 in our chronological tour through the American movies of the 80s - this one another look back at World War II, courtesy of a man who was there - it's Sam Fuller's semi-autobiographical THE BIG RED ONE!
