German #geographer and #demographer in #Melbourne. I love and share #maps and #data that explain how the #world works.
This vintage map from 1942 shows the Pacific. Nice touch that it talks about the projection it uses in the top right corner too. I love maps that are centered around the Pacific because they show just how isolated #Hawaii is. Source: buff.ly/2OuFciJ
One of the best #vintage (1922) #infographics shows the human machine. There is even an animated version on industriepalast.com
This is one of my favourite vintage (1851) #infographics! It compares the length of #rivers and size of lakes. Source: buff.ly/2JB8vgM #geography #hydrology #history
Yet in France people burn cars on the streets once somebody mentions a higher retirement age…
In WWII, Allied ships crossing the North Atlantic faced an air-cover gap. This map shows losses and how limited aircraft range left convoys exposed to German U-boats. Source: buff.ly/kYDl0EF
Rearranging Europe. The most populated country gets the largest country. I quite like a few of the innovations this map brings. Austrian Portugal? Tell me more! Norwegian Croatia? Yes, please! Poland finally gets a direct Russian border again? Yikes. Source: buff.ly/5vySlxK
The US is a very rich nation at the top. Like very very rich. One thousand billionaires!
Fun flow chart shows you what European language you are reading. HT @oysteinb

You teleport me back to the Europe of 500 AD and I’d probably couldn’t understand a single person.
Beautifully designed #map shows a selection of former nations in North and South America. All these short-lived little nations were unknown to me. Quirky #history #trivia. Source: buff.ly/2EL01QZ
Map shows North America about 77 Millions years ago. Saying things like “the US is more divided now than ever before” clearly isn’t factually correct 😜 Source: buff.ly/39psJq2
A blast from the past. This is what North and Middle America looked like in 1836. Source: buff.ly/2SBvwDT
Overtourism in Kyoto? Sure. It’s mostly a local tourist issue. I’m sure the international visitors are a bit more obnoxious 😉
Honey, let’s have a third kid to minimize the sick days in our household by 1%.
This map from @terriblemaps isn’t a terrible map at all. This most Texas of all maps measures the distance from Texas in Texases. Very Texan!
Up north in the US snow must exceed 60cm (24inch) for school to be cancelled. That’s a lot of snow! The best bets for a snow day are probably northern Virginia/DC and North Carolina, where relatively modest snowfall can be enough to close schools. Source: buff.ly/ul0FIUN
Super cool graph for the history buffs out there. All the emperors of the Roman Empire from start to its divided finish.
The concept of cables all across the ocean floor transporting my friendly map posts around the world remains totally wild to me. Here is an animated map that shows the increase of this infrastructure. Source: mapped.earth HT @mappedearth
Only two times in the last twenty years the English Premier League saw more games being won by teams with below 50% possession.
How sheepish is Europe? This map shows the distribution of sheep across Europe. Source: buff.ly/dSfHDOe
