Thresholds are necessary for clinical decisions, but how do we set them? This question always comes up as a challenge for the clinical utility of dimensional psychopathology models. Fortunately, there are principled solutions! Our new paper lays them out. Led by Yuliya Kotelnovika & Roman Kotov

Consideration of statistical, impairment, prediction, and cost-benefit approaches for clinical-decision thresholds in #Psychiatry may enhance risk assessment and treatment selection beyond diagnosis-based cutoffs. ja.ma/4fEIpcR

🚨 New preprint: In this paper we make the case for measuring social media use at the level of naturally occurring sessions (i.e., beginning when the app/site is opened and ending when it is closed). Across 7 days and 161 participants this gave us nearly 4,000 paired sessions of use 🧵

Depicts the data collection process. 1) participant opens TikTok, 2) open survey is prompted, 3) participant uses TikTok as normal, 4) participant closes TikTok, 5) close survey is prompted

One thing I struggle with is the fact that we seem to publish way too much as a field, and yet there are so many things that are left unexplored. Or things that need to be tested for generalizability and robustness. Not sure entirely sure how to balance these competing demands.

Many congrats and thanks to @renemottus.bsky.social for planning and executing a marvelous European Conference on Personality this past week Edinburgh didn’t disappoint, and I got to do a biennial stadtbummel with two of my favorite people and collaborators: Aleksandra Kaurin and Whitney Ringwald

New meta by @peterhaehner.bsky.social et al (I'm a little middle author) on individual differences in personality change across the lifespan (229 studies, N = 230k) 10.1037/bul0000525 Cool finding (imo): For all Big Five, variance in change is greatest in youth, declining through young adulthood!

Individual differences in change for each of the Big Five across ages 0 to 80. The trend for each trait is that individual differences in change are decreasing with age.

When we consider children in cultural evolution, we tend to cast them as recipients of adult culture. In our BBS target article, @sheinalew.bsky.social & I argued there's more: through 'peer cultures', children actively drive cultural adaptation. Our final paper + a rich set of responses is out now!
