Officially back in the Midwest! I have carefully built my entire personality around being from the Midwest and now I get to live out my dreams every day. You can find me in Madison, WI but I'm happy to travel to any Midwest locale (even, Ohio, if the conditions are right).

Home in rural Michigan and I find myself quite emotional when driving through farmland that is being devoured by data centers under construction. I resent that so much of what people enjoy in life, myself included, is subsidized by those who are most vulnerable.

This week, I had the opportunity to participate in a "student takeover" event in the humanities. 8 faculty from across the uni were asked to talk about a humanities figure who "changed their mind." I chose to talk about Roxane Gay, who helped me appreciate the complexity of the human experience.

I suppose I’m turning into an Arthur Miller play aficionado, which now leads me to lament the US accents of today’s West End cast. It was odd to hear a Brooklyn accent given the Ohio backdrop. I mean, who would move from Brooklyn to Ohio?!

Each semester I go in my classroom and I try to figure out what we would use to block the doors, if it would be safe to crawl out the windows, where we could hide if there was a mass shooter in campus. It’s such an indictment of this country how we have normalized these preventable tragedies.

I don’t care how many times I’ve been to an airport, you can’t convince me my gate exists until I see it with my own eyes.

Back in the Midwest for 6 days, so really going to lean into my one personality trait while I can. Ope!

I don’t use scantrons or blue books, but I do print out my exams and have students write their responses directly on the exam. I *love* seeing students think “out loud” on paper. It provides incredible insight into their understanding of concepts and I appreciate the random notes and drawings.
