🇨🇺 On this day in 1961, a mercenary brigade armed, trained and transported by the CIA landed at #PlayaGirón - the Bay of Pigs - as part of US plans to defeat the Cuban Revolution. Revolutionary forces, led by Fidel Castro, defeated the invasion within three days.

🇨🇺 "This is what they cannot forgive... that we have carried out a socialist revolution right under the nose of the United States!" On this day in 1961, ahead of the Bay of Pigs invasion, Fidel Castro declared the socialist character of the Cuban Revolution for the first time.

🇨🇺 On this day in 1961, air strikes were launched against three Cuban airfields. These strikes aimed to eliminate the possibility of an effective defence against the impending US-backed invasion at the Bay of Pigs. The assault killed seven Cubans and destroyed two planes.
