Excited to reunite with former benchmates at International Ion Channel Conference. Apologize for the severely jet lagged faces, but at least we remembered the golden rule of @ardemp.bskyverified.social lab regarding conferences: “No badges outside the venues”. We think Ardem will be proud.
Excited to share our latest story in Nature. We developed a high-throughput cellular stretch system to look for genes regulating membrane rupture under tension, and found an amazing small protein called NINJ1 that weakens the membrane for rupture! I had the privilege to witness this groundbreaking discovery six months after I joined the Patapoutian lab. I remember asking Bertrand "What is it?" and he replied "FAM38A". I knew it was a big deal at the time, but little did I know that this would become one of biggest discoveries in biology.
15-year anniversary of discovering PIEZO1 today! Bertrand Coste, then a postdoc in my lab, was knocking down potential mechanosensory ion channels in Neuro2a cells. Candidate 72 yielded a result. Bertrand came into my office and said: ‘I got it!’ — November 13, 2009. A great memory!🧪🧠
