Nothing to make me want to pick up litter on the roadside like listening to the Raft soundtrack while driving

So… just got some Anthropic settlement mail—real actual physical mail—addressed to my home, but for authors who aren’t me. I’ve figured out how 4 of the 5 authors are linked to me, but still puzzled about what happened here and what to do about it, if anything.
I'm a professional technical writer. When I told a coworker that I'm helping write grant applications for a non-profit she said I should use Co-pilot. Why? Why would I outsource the thing I am best at to a resource-devouring, copyright-stealing machine? Why would anyone?
The problem is, the hype of AI is always so clearly manufactured. It’s sold as essential but mysteriously so — rarely is it portrayed as making life better; it’s sold as doing things WE want to keep doing. We want it to inventory our fridge and detect cancer, not make music and replace us at work.
Not watching the Superb Owl on account of generally preferring the Olympics. (Hooray for Bad Bunny and Green Day, though. They’re what this country needs right now.) But I do have a quibble with watching the Olympics right now: Quadcopter drones. Now, don’t get me wrong…
A nursery/greenhouse specializing in wildflowers called Maslow’s Hierarchy of Weeds.
A store specializing in Mardi Gras parade throws called Maslow’s Hierarchy of Beads.
We have 15 stories (3 novellas, 7 novelettes, and 5 short stories) on the Locus Recommended Reading List this year. Congratulations to all the authors!

Note to self: do not throw your hands in the air in celebration less than 36 hours removed from abdominal surgery. No matter how beautiful and timely a Moritz Seidee goal is. Ow ow ow ow ow. #LGRW
“Everyone says ‘To be cringe is to be free’ until I start talking about Imagine Dragons.” - My 16 year old I feel that, kiddo.
And then the organ player in the Flames arena just rocked out on “Last Christmas.” #LGRW
Other random hockey game thoughts: the Wings are playing the Calgary Flames, who have a player with the last name of Frost. And every time his name is called I think of a friend of my sister’s who I once rescued from a lake house bathroom, the door of which they could not unlock from the inside.
Really enjoying this Red Wings game on its own merits, but also enjoying occasionally hearing (faintly) the director’s feed, informing the broadcast team that they’re going to break or whatever. #LGRW
Out of the hospital now and mostly feeling like I’m recovering from all the inactivity of being in the hospital as much as I’m working on recovering from what had me there.
My stay in the worst hotel continues. Doctor friend came by to say he was here to give me my sponge bath, which I thought was a little cruel not to actually follow up on. Hanging here for another test and then maybe go home? Which would be nice as I’m almost out of @kbwagers.com books to read.

It's time again as a notable Italian-American to note Christopher Columbus was an absolute piece of shit human who didn't land anywhere near this actual country so why the fuck should he stop the mail for the whole day Anyway, Happy Indigenous People's Day, y'all

Delighted to say that my new book of words is out today, in which I explain how ‘sneeze’ was born from a mistake, that ‘window’ is a Viking leftover meaning ‘eye of the wind’, and that the Finns really do have a word for drinking alone in your underwear. linktr.ee/WordsforLife
Times-a-running out. (Okay, yes, sure, I know there will probably be another sale next month, but I gotta make this look good).
TeePublic is running a sale this weekend with $16 t-shirts, which include my latest designs. www.teepublic.com/user/laughin....
And this isn’t unique to transit folks. Drivers in Metro Detroit will howl about the state of the roads and how bad they are… and then howl again when major maintenance and reconstruction projects start. Like… you can’t have it both ways. Shitty roads or intrusive maintenance, pick one.
The T is a fucking billion years old in transit system terms. It was designed by people who had never done this before. It has *huge* structural problems that you can't undo. It takes sacrifice. And the people who howl about "not enough transit" are the first ones to scream when the repairs start.
Messing with scammers, community theatre stage manager edition. (Yes, this me, no I’m not Olivia, and this is most definitely not a cast member. All of my cast and crew are wonderful and timely people, who I would never talk to like this, even if they did try to blow off a show for a barbecue.)
