What a whirlwind: This week I’m recording “Sleep with the Angels,” an anthology of my speeches from 1992-93. There are lessons and strength to be claimed in our history. In returning to these moments, I wish to honor our shared past and carry it into the now — to create a more hopeful future. ❤️

Sanders: When historians write about this dangerous moment in American history, when they write about courage and sacrifice, the people of Minnesota will deserve a special chapter.. In the face of unprecedented occupation, this community fought back and won.

We are not used to seeing so much distress; we are not meant to. But we must bear witness. Do not let them tell us what we see with our own eyes isn’t true. Keep going. A reckoning is coming and we need to be there to witness that too.

In my life I’ve seen the cruelty, prejudice, and hate that people are capable of. I’m sorry that this generation has to experience it in their streets and on their phones, day after day. Be there for one another. We will get through this together.

It’s ok to not be ok in these times. This isn’t the first time our society has been faced with devastation and it won’t be the last. But we will persevere.

Sending out thoughts of love today. To those protesting in the streets, to those donating or participating in mutual aid, and to those who are caring for children, family members, or themselves, just taking it one day at a time. I see you and I love you.

No one expects to become part of history. But we are here. The time we're living in will be written about, studied, and questioned. What we choose to do, or not do, will shape how it is remembered. When this moment is read about by your children or grandchildren — what will your actions say?

This is my community. This is my family. Congratulations again to Project Angel Food on the expansion of their new campus! Their love and commitment to this community only grows stronger every day, and with each person who shows up to serve, nourish, and demonstrate that no one is ever forgotten.

The Walk for Peace is an act of love, perseverance, & hope. The monks remind us that we don’t walk alone in our pursuit of good. At times all we can do is put one foot in front of the other — thank you for showing us that this too is an act of courage. We will walk on & fight for peace with love.

“The only thing more powerful than hate is love” “Together we are America.” Bad Bunny said in his art and joy what we ALL needed to hear, and what we should embody ❤️

Witnessing the #WalkForPeace over these last weeks has given me a profound sense of hope. Their light illuminates the best of humanity — if they can weather the storms they’ve journeyed through, so will we.

Even though all of us will experience it in one form or another, most of us are completely unprepared to navigate grief. I can’t encourage you enough to listen to the life-changing words of David Kessler. His conversation with the great Mel Robbins holds wisdom we all need to hear.

Attending Project Angel Food’s benefit healed my heart this winter! I loved seeing these wonderful people come together to support an org that's always steadfast in its community care. A highlight was having my portrait made – in chocolate! – by the remarkable Robert Vargas!!

Thank you Authority Magazine for amplifying the importance of upstanders — those who choose to speak & act when silence would be easier. Many know my story of becoming a surprising advocate, but there's still more I have to say, & am still saying! I hope you’ll join me in being one less bystander.

If we, as a society, can start bearing witness to these truths, American can head in a direction of real and intentional change.

In case you hadn’t heard, “Uneasy Silence” is available as an audiobook on #Audible and everywhere you listen! Narrating my story out loud, in my own voice, was cathartic and deeply personal. I hope you enjoy experiencing it as much as I enjoyed creating it: amzn.to/42lmwsn

As this year ends, I’m deeply grateful — for time with friends and family, for creating “Uneasy Silence,” and for serving in community. I’m thankful for my support system & my voice that allow me to keep working for a more just, compassionate world. In the new year, may we keep choosing one another.

If you're old enough to remember that 1992 was a presidential election year, you know that both conventions featured speakers living with AIDS. Not surprising for the Democrats, who showcased Elizabeth Glaser and Bob Hattoy. But the Republican National Convention also had a speaker with AIDS... 1/

Thank you, Mark, and everyone at WICN Public Radio for inviting me! It was a gift to discuss Uneasy Silence — my heart, my art, my story — and to honor those we’ve lost to HIV/AIDS while reflecting on how we can use our voices to shape a more compassionate future.
