Okay Donkey Magazine

A literary magazine for the odd, the off-kilter, and the just plain weird. 🫏 Est. May 2018. Re-designed site!: okaydonkeymag.com Newsletter: okaydonkeymag.beehiiv.com Bookshop: https://bookshop.org/shop/okaydonkey

“They had a cake with a guitar, drum set and microphone as frostings. They played ‘Lateralus’ for the wedding song and or mosh pit. The crowd spun around them like a trance.” “The Concert Lovers” by Jose Hernandez Diaz, new poetry out today at OKD: buff.ly/iNzjiMA

The background has layers that almost look like cut-out construction paper, with the very back being a red-orange with a faded drum kit on top, and the remaining three layers being a crowd of people in a gradient from gray-blue to dark-blue. In the center is a white-pink wedding cake tilted a few degrees to the right, and a swirly pale yellow decorative frame behind it, which marks the beginning of the lemon-yellow lower-third of the image. Most importantly, on top of the wedding cake is Sad Jack (or should we say Jill?) in a bride's veil with his face up against a black electric guitar wearing a tuxedo around the base of its neck.

This month’s newsletter features OKD Lead Fiction Reader Rina Palumbo on “Open Mic Nights.” Plus, another interview with Poetry Editor Erin Malone, but this time it’s all about her upcoming project as Bainbridge Island Poet Laureate! Read the full newsletter at buff.ly/6gw32ZJ

Red stage curtains and three separate spotlights frame Sad Jack performing in the middle of the stage, where he wears pink cowboy boots and a white-blue tutu.

“She was beautiful in an intimidating sort of way, and though only a few years older than me, she had the confidence of a grown woman, something I kept forgetting I was as well.” “For a Limited Time Only” by Meghan Proulx, new flash fiction out today at OKD: buff.ly/qz75twQ

The background is a dark purple and magenta cross-over and there's a gradually fading analog clockface with roman numerals instead of Arabic numbers. Sad Jack is tinted cerulean blue and wears a long wig of straight, black hair.

“She must return to the very beginning of things. [...] Before migraines. Before she felt the need to cut her finger open on a jagged leaf. She decided that some lies were small enough not to kill her.” “Oranges” by Laura Jane Lee, new flash fiction out today at OKD: buff.ly/1JdLsqF

The background of the image shows a color-inverted, yellow-tinted photo of a glass bowl of oranges sitting on a linen table cloth. Even further in the background is a zoomed-in, red-tinted photo of the veins of a leaf. Sitting on top of one of the oranges in the bowl is, indeed, an orange-tinted Sad Jack with an orange slice over the arc of his back. Blood-orange splatters the foreground.

“She had nightmares in which everyone but her knew the secret of who to be. In these dreams she’d walk from person to person, often familiar faces from school, begging them to tell her [...]” “Chrysalis” by Santiago Wilson Heredia, new flash fiction out today at OKD: buff.ly/SI0iDwk

The background of the image is a collage of grainy photos of countrysides, namely valleys and rivers. The foreground is made up of 80s-like translucent blocks and ovals that are colored dark magenta, blue, and green. Hanging from the top of the image and into the center is a chrysalis with water droplets on the outside. The bottom left section of the image shows a faceless woman with a happy face stamped on her head walking to the right, head down. Sad Jack stands in front of her as if leading her.

The background of this image is a faded photo of a post box outside on a cobblestone path. The box is highlighted red in the foreground and there's a photo of Sad Jack taken out of a dark red envelope coming out of the box.
