Visser nodded faintly at this, as though confirming some understanding, or maybe having extracted an admission of sorts. They passed the rest of the ride in silence. They were nearly at the top of the building now; off to his left, Herecic could see the sparkling streets of Paradise’s capital. This was a shared city, with architectural styles competing for dominance just as their corporate owners did. There were the characteristic blocky structures of Magellanix, built to recall castles, battlements, and kings from eras long past. Elsewhere, the sweeping, tapering spires of TransGalactic held form, that company incapable of manufacturing anything that didn’t on some level resemble a spaceship. And, of course, he saw the organic-chemistry-come-to-life stylings of the InterTech constructions, this complex the greatest among them.
To his right, he was now afforded a bird’s-eye view of the inside of the pyramidine ring. This held a botanical center, populated with what would have appeared to the untrained eye an unremarkable collection of bushes, vines, grasses, and dwarf trees, all interspersed with ponds, fountains, and pathways along which a handful of InterTech employees strolled. But even from this height, Herecic knew what he was seeing. This was no mere flower garden.
The flora planted here was responsible for the most profitable drugs InterTech had ever brought to market.

Text excerpt from NOMARA, a science fiction WIP by L.L. Stephens. In this snip, Kharys recalls his first years among the nomari and how he was cultivated to be a Queen's lover.

A bench stood nearby, its smooth, pale marble beckoning through the purpling shadows. She pulled him to it and drew him down to sit, facing her, across the dusk. He allowed her to lead him. Her hand on his wrist had become a summons he wanted to obey. He followed it the same way he might follow the sound of water in the desert, or light in darkness, a yearning as deep as his life and beyond his power to ignore. He was a child no longer. His youth was rapidly seeking manhood, subject to fevered, half-formed desires of the flesh.
“I envy Arasend her garden,” Oandah said. “I envy her the flower that she keeps.”
Realizing what she meant, he dropped his gaze. Arasend, of course, had been growing him for a purpose. Oandah plucked a blossom as crimson as the blood that pounded in his veins and held it in her hands to warm it with her scent.

WIPSnips 1 September - 'courtyard' substituted for 'garden'.

No news reached him here; his gaolers made sure of that. Not even a whisper of a rumour. Morn could have invaded again and he wouldn’t know it, locked away in this hall-fortress deep in Gytha’s Spine.
He had stopped expecting to be released. Stopped hoping for it. He wasn’t sure exactly when it had happened. He was not patient, not made to be locked away from the world, and he did not have the fortitude to withstand it. Confined, he simply withered.
So when the clatter of hooves woke him from a doze, he merely rolled over and tried to go back to sleep. He had been sleeping more and more these last weeks. What was the point of being awake if all he could do was stare at the same bare walls?
One hundred and twenty-eight days. Or was it one hundred and twenty-nine?
Sleep eluded him. The clamour from the courtyard was too great for a single rider. Men called out to one another, their words indistinct over the howl of Gytha’s wind. The bloody wind. How he had grown to hate the sound of its passage, whistling through the foothills of Gytha’s Spine and down into the lowlands. The breath of the dragon. The sound of freedom.

Sergei shrugged and eyed the dough again. Probably couldn’t get away with snagging two. Anya might as well have been shooting daggers at him over Linda’s head.  

“Are you and Papa eating?” she asked. 

She got the short end of the stick, being the only girl, especially since their older brother Kolya had been absent for much of the last ten years, doing God knew what. Getting into trouble. Making their father worry. No one knew if he was coming to the wedding or not. Anya was sure he would come through, but then, Anya was always sure about him even though she’d had to slide into their mother’s role too often, and then she’d had kids early. 

It was still a pain in the ass. 

“Shoe leather if you and Linda haven’t been over in a few days.”  

Anya narrowed her eyes. “You know what I mean, Seryozha. Pop-Tarts are not food.”

 “Pop-Tarts are food, as are Cheetos, Twinkies, Ding Dongs, and potato chips. When are we eating?”

“I’m just mentioning it as a possibility. I think you need to focus your anger. Instead of wearing incendiary clothing, why don’t you start asking your questions? Why don’t you start wondering why the snow looks different to you, and the rain, and the sky?” 

Her words rattle him. He’s repeated his dreams so many times he wants to throw up, but he hasn’t told anyone how he sees the rest of the world. Not since he was very small. He’d found out fast that secrets need to be kept because they might be held against you. 

“How do you know about that?” he asks shakily. 

She throws the pigeons more bread. “Oh, I know about a lot of things. Like these pigeons here. They all look like pigeons, don’t they? But if you look closer… really close… you might see something else inside some of them, something more.” 

“Why would there be something more about a pigeon? They’re just pigeons. They eat trash.” 

“You’ve become very good at not answering questions, haven’t you, Seryozha?”

“I doubt that, but I imagine he is a little stressed today with you moving out.” Kolya hesitated, then added, “Mama would have been proud.”  

Would be, I automatically corrected him in my head. She would be proud.  

The idea hit me unexpectedly and therefore harder than I was prepared for. I wondered what Mama would think if she were here like Cam’s mom, if she would have sent me to school with a five-pound jar of peanut butter to make sure I wouldn’t starve. Probably not. But maybe she would have sent me off in a cloud of cigarette smoke with a rough hug and a kiss on both cheeks. Kolya was watching me slantwise from under the brim of his cap, and I swear I could see a little shine in his brown eyes. Papa always said they were the same shape as mine, the same shape as Mama’s. Maybe I had some shine in my eyes, too. 

We both looked up so we wouldn’t have to look at each other, and that was when I saw Ben walking back. Instantly, I forgot about the family feelings—or maybe it was a relief to shove them aside. Old hurts don’t stop hurting just because they’re old.
