Patrick - Blurry before beautiful: image previews for the web

Showing blurry previews while images are loading on the web is a very common pattern which we'd love to standardize at the browser level, so that all developers can use it with very little code and co...

One reason I find the absolute dogshit quality of virtually all AI prose so existentially depressing is because at this point the bull case is AI gets better at writing and 90% of prose is undetectable shoveled slop. it being detectable and viscerally terrible doesn’t seem to be stopping anyone.

Wrote a thing on the plane last night: The Web made the distribution of ideas universally accessible and effectively free, to anyone with the patience to embody them in words. Will it be allowed to do the same for ideas that can be embodied in code? aldenblog.io/posts/2026-0...

“Loitering is not permitted in this area. Please proceed to a designated location. Thank you for your cooperation,” a surveillance machine tells a small cluster of National Guard members as they patrol the fenced off Reflecting Pool in the rain.

AI-first development is making it once again joyful and eminently possible for anyone to create on the Web. It's a feeling I've missed since View Source became illegible, and a silver lining that's arriving just in time. Back in the Sandbox: aldenblog.io/posts/2026-0...

Web standards (and standards-adjacent projects like Interop) are political venues, so it shouldn't be surprising that the discussions therein turn political. That doesn't stop the politics from being frustrating, or even incomprehensible, especially from the outside.

I take a deep dive into Interop 2025; why the project is there, how it picks what browser features to focus on each year, how well it's doing and what the big areas for this year are - a mix of cleaning up existing features and making sure new features arrive already interoperable

Interop Unites Browser Makers To Smooth Web Inconsistencies

Copilot Vision is out now, free in Edge. It can literally see what you see on screen (if you opt in). Pretty amazing! It’ll think out loud with you when you're browsing online. No more over-explaining, copy-pasting, or struggling to put something into words.

The Apple Studio Display is so close to being an incredible monitor for PC users, except that you basically need a Mac on hand to use it reliably. When it works, it's amazing. But sometimes it just won't turn on unless I plug into a MacBook first, and there's no control over brightness etc.
