WHO recommends 5 days of intravenous antibiotics for children hospitalised with severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). A new study investigated the safety of a step-down to different oral antibiotics and the shortest effective duration: spkl.io/633247MoCp

Figure showing antibiotic treatment over time by randomised drug and by randomised duration in the oral step-down groups only. The shaded areas represent 95% CIs. Times are measured from the initiation of intravenous treatment because treatment duration within randomised groups was based on the total duration of intravenous and oral antibiotics. Randomisation was within 24 h of initiation of intravenous antibiotics for all participants, with very similar durations across all groups. Copyright: 2026 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Ltd.
