After 17 years at Cleveland Clinic I am starting today as Senior Vice President and Worldwide Head of Hematology and Oncology Medical Affairs at Bristol-Myers Squibb. I am so thankful to all my colleagues, friends, and patients at the Clinic and will be forever grateful for my experiences there.

excellent piece by @mirandayaver.bsky.social in @statnews.com on how health insurers use administrative burdens to "ration by inconvenience" require prior auth, deny claims -- "it's ok because they can appeal" but the appeal process is daunting, confusing, takes a ton of time and effort etc

I characterize this dynamic as “rationing by inconvenience.” The appeal process’s administrative burdens — to draw on the language of Pamela Herd and Donald Moynihan’s seminal work on this subject — lead far too many Americans to go without prescribed care not due to final denial, but rather because of accumulations of inconveniences and psychological toll leading people to abandon the appeal process. It may even make them more reluctant to seek future treatment.

I wrote this based on my JHPPL article on inequitable administrative burdens of appealing coverage denials, incorporating a new interview I did with a doc who reviews claims for a major insurer and who said, "We’re told denying things is OK because people can appeal" www.statnews.com/2025/01/23/h...
