Oceanographer, founder of Tini Scientific. She/her 🏳️‍🌈. My goal in life was to throw expensive s**t in the ocean. Then I did it and became a world expert on ocean sensors.

I just *love* how the ORIGINAL observations of this phenomenon get ignored every time this gets posted. *WE* observed this originally in December 2013 on Dorado outcrop off Costa Rica with JASON. We then went back in 2014 and saw it again with Alvin. Predating the MBNMS dives by 5+ years.

Happy World Octopus Day! 🐙 In 2019, scientists in Alvin discovered thousands of octopuses tending their eggs in a part of now known as Octopus Garden. 📲Watch the full video with WHOI principal engineer Andy Bowen and MBNMS research specialist Chad King: go.whoi.edu/octo-garden

I started with an octopus, but I am imaging what data any animals would take with a pack of sensors. Their daily habits are all so different.

It's #WorldOctopusDay! 🐙 🌊 There's only been a few studies tracking octopus movement. Seems it's pretty hard to stick a tag on a soft and flexible body! That didn't stop us from imagining where these intelligent and beguiling creatures would go and what ocean conditions they would measure.

Pleased to report the results of my prototype "basement calibration bath" shakedown tests are going really well. Stability within 0.1°C for each set point and bath uniformity to within 0.002°C. Surprised/not surprised that there is a visible bias for the temperature sensors on my apple watch.

Photo of a sports water cooler that is serving as a water bath. Image of a anova sous vide machine in the middle with a thermometer in the water to double check the 9.5 degree celsius reading on the sous vide. Plot of the bath and reference temperatures as I cycle through each temperature setpoint, that looks like a plateau with time. On the bottom is the difference between the reference sensors which is within 0.002 degrees Kelvin.

Things I am asking regarding for quotes for ocean instrumentation: "If I requested a model with a pressure sensor to 100 dbar, why did you include a 10,000 dbar pressure kit?" For the record, I used to work for one of these companies, but not in sales. Is this normal?

Yesterday was brought to me by the letter P Processing - all the data 📈 Ping - sonar ping added to app🔊 Pesto - dinner 🍝 Pirates - evening cruise 🏴‍☠️ Pollution - wildfire smoke 🔥 (with a terrible consolation prize of the reddest sunset)

Map of swim data taken near Alki point. Each swim is a pink dot. One dot is labeled with the info: August 2026, 41 minutes in water, 16.1 C average water temp and 0.5 meter max depth. On the bottom there is a summary, 47 sessions, 5 testers and 18 minutes and 57 minutes total of data.Bowl of pesto pasta with a spoon in it. And some tomatoesPirate ship at dock. Red sunset under the aurora bridge in seattle.

your reminder to log that weekend swim, paddle, or float 📣 bob environmental runs on sensors already in your apple watch, no new gear needed. tap start before you get in and it logs real ocean data while you swim. 🌊 📲 download bob environmental and start logging today #Bobbers

we can predict tides to the centimeter but the water right off the beach where people actually swim is still a blind spot. rip currents, temperature swings and wave energy that no buoy miles offshore is gonna catch. we are working on closing that gap 🌊 #Bobbers

Turns out, there is no native way to show real-time swim distance (but you can for running, walking and cycling?) Now integrating a bespoke solution, but one with greater control and accuracy which I am excited about.

The open water swim app I'm building will only show live distance and pace when moving my arms. I'm about to go in my backyard and "Air Swim".... #SwiftUI

Image of an apple watch ultra with the swim app showing. There are two buttons to choose a swim workout, open water at the top in salmon and pool at the bottom in magenta.
