Again, JCO has written 29 hrs a day, 8 days a wk for the past 457 years. This is her strength & weakness. It’s a silly statement but I can see how she specifically would make it. One of my old professors, major Shakespeare scholar, is a world-famous romance novelist. Reinventing the wheel is hard..

What the fuck, Joyce. I don’t even read romance novels but this kind of thinking pisses me the fuck off. It further pushes that mentality that some books as “lesser” which is bullshit! All books count!

Joyce Carol Oates
This is why Al-generated romance novels make perfect sense. Formulaic fiction doesn't need to be written by hand, so to speak; what difference does it make if a machine "writes" it? There are machine-made clothes & there are custom-made clothes. They appeal to different consumers.

I was accused of plagiarism once, or committed it unconsciously - as a student I was given a play to read 1000 times. It seeped into my work. About half a dozen non-consecutive lines in my play were similar to the other one. The dean - one of the worst people in the American theatre - admitted to

I am not sure what the Dramatists Guild is up to, or if writers even care anymore in the name of blah blah ‘collaboration,’ but it’s in the fucking contract that no name but an actor can go above the title

Maxine Peake’s father & his partner don’t really like the theatre, but they came to see her Hamlet. She asked the partner - - Did you like it? - Not really. - Why not? - I didn’t like t’ story. Maxine was rather thrilled.

KITTENS. We would like to sit with you, but there are sounds. Let us investigate. (They listen at the fence, disappear. I walk away, stop. Kittens materialise like ghosts.) KITTENS. We didn't say you could leave. We are trying to protect you, idiot. (They sit at my feet.)

(Kitten sits a foot away.) JS. Yes, treats. KITTEN. Hnnngh… no, no, that’s ok. (Treat drops accidentally.) KITTEN. Hnnnnnghh… (Sidesteps, approaches treat tactically.) No, no, that’s ok. (I toss treat so it’s in basically the same spot anyway.) KITTEN. Hell yeah brother

Mike Leigh at NYFF tonight: ‘I’ve said it before, and I don’t mind saying it again: film directors who make long speeches about their film before a screening should be taken round the back & shot in the head.’

I thought another cat was bothering kittens, but they were hovering. Opened window to find it their father, not seen for some months. (I think mom ran him off when he ate before they did.) They allowed him to eat their leavings. Dad looked at me like, ‘Why the fuck are you yelling out the window?’

My black kitten pal has a tail longer than his body, & the only one I’ve ever seen that’s fully black on the outside & grey underneath. It’s wild, it’s like he was painted.

The line about post-Automatic it was this or ‘become James Taylor’ is well-known but I also think they wanted to let loose playing live again. They were a brilliant, brilliant live band, probably the last big one who’d played every hovel everywhere. When I saw them live I was shocked.

👹 Monster was released on this day in 1994. “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?,” “Bang and Blame,” “Strange Currencies,” “Crush With Eyeliner,” “Tongue” — and a run of music videos that makes this one especially fun to look back on. Share your favorite song in the comments…

In the 90s there were chart hits ubiquitous on certain kinds of radio but never played in shops, so I never heard them & didn't care. Still mostly don't. The trouble with a certain sort of pop fan is it's their whole personality, & like lots of walking black holes they're bullies.

By the time I was in my early thirties, I knew that if I wanted (and needed professionally) to keep up with movies, TV, and theater, AND I liked to read, that music was just gonna sort of go on without me. It's one reason that I will never mock someone for unfamiliarity with a piece of pop culture.

The kindest thing I can say about Choosin' Texas is it has a sort of 70s Linda Ronstadt quality: studiedly atmospheric, polished, 'timeless' by committee. It's well-written & decently performed but boring, not a patch on the fizz of All I Want For Christmas, Fantasy, etc. The phenomenon proves -

I know my Joy Division. I've worn the releases out, heard many bootlegs. I can't tell you how great the new live box set is. Unheard stuff, newly heard in full, or heard in new clarity. The famous first London gig at the Hope & Anchor, Islington - 27 Dec 1978, Barney miserable with flu -

I ordered this in Sept 1995. I got it probably ten days after it came out in the UK. For a while I guess it was the only copy for miles. I flogged it like others do the Bible. (My ex, seeing Pulp live recently: ‘And that is why I am the way I am.’) Now Jarvis signed it for me. ❤️ **
