[Muhammed Hamdi Efendi recounts an incident he experienced in the early 1900s]:
“Here, I will record an example from the telepathic incidents that occurred within myself which first drew my attention: While I was a student at the Law School of Nüvvâb in Istanbul, one afternoon after class I went to my room in Nuruosmaniye, where I stayed as a calligrapher. I sat by the window alone, and as soon as I sat down — without yet engaging in anything — my elder uncle, Muhammed Emin Efendi, suddenly came to mind. At that very moment, a deep sorrow descended upon my heart; I felt like crying. Yet at other times, his memory would inevitably bring me joy and relief, for he was a rare embodiment of virtue. On that day, however, both the manner in which the memory appeared and the sorrow — contrary to my usual joy — astonished me. I immediately made note of it.
Fifteen days later, I received a letter by post from my hometown. My father wrote that on that very day my uncle had passed away and had bequeathed a few of his books to me as a keepsake. At that time, from a distance where the mail would take ten days to arrive, I had felt the sorrow of that tragic event at the very moment it occurred, and my eyes had filled with tears.
Such are the incidents they call telepathy. In our terminology, we would count all of these among inspirations; and if such a state occurred during sleep, we would simply call it a dream. Compared to our ordinary feelings, these are extraordinary occurrences, yet they are not rare — on the contrary, they are quite common.
