We could have the extraordinary spectacle of the Dutch coalition parties voting different ways on the budget next week. The VVD will oppose a proposal by left-wing opposition party Pro to raise an extra €1.5 billion in wealth taxes while D66 and CDA support it. I can't think of a precedent for this.

Amid the agonising about how Trump might react to a heavy defeat in the midterms, I feel like we didn’t think hard enough about what effect a heavy defeat would have on Trump. He came into power promising to move fast and break things; he ran into a firestorm of his own making and broke his party.

Somehow the Dutch government finds itself in a position on its budget negotiations where every route leads to a dead end and commentators are starting to speculate, as the crucial vote in parliament looms on November 12, that the coalition could collapse. How did we get here?

I'd really like to hear from anybody – at all – who got the right to live in the UK *automatically* after living there after only *five years*, because surely a sitting MP wouldn't just spout ignorant rubbish about such a sensitive matter?

The right to live in the UK forever will no longer be granted to migrants almost automatically after 5 years. Instead, it will be earned, under the new earned settlement model set out before Parliament today. www.gov.uk/government/n...

Utterly fatuous claims being made on other social media channels that the protests in The Hague were smothered by local football hooligans "defending" the city centre. "We don't tolerate our city being plundered, cultural heritage being destroyed or any other form of vandalism," they blustered.

Tien aanhoudingen in Den Haag, maar geen grote demonstraties in steden

In Den Haag wordt geprotesteerd. Er is veel politie, net als in Maastricht, maar daar is de sfeer gemoedelijk.

Good one-frame summary of the surreal scenes in The Hague. Half a dozen vans and around 30 riot police slow-marching in pursuit of around 10 teenagers, none of whom are armed or even masked. A few are making TikTok videos as they run. It's so quiet you can hear the parakeets in the drone footage.

This week’s @dutchnewsnl.bsky.social podcast: the budget negotiations are moving at a pace that would make a snail lose patience, the Netherlands are vaguely boycotting Eurovision after another U-turn, Zelenskyy visits The Hague and some very spooky goings-on in a graveyard in Utrecht.

As expected, the much hyped Gen Z protest in The Hague is a big nothingburger: four youths arrested on the Malieveld for covering their faces, the Herengracht zoned off for about 10 minutes, a bunch of guys in black sitting on café terraces. I've seen bigger riots outside a pancake restaurant.

Dutch PM Jetten: "The way forward for Europeans, but also for Americans and others, is to put more sanctions on the Russian regime, not less. So buying Russian energy is a very stupid idea. I can assure you that there is no European leader who is willing to buy Russian gas in the next few years."

As a Gen X-er who believes that my generation’s abject failure of leadership, allowing the dregs of the previous generation to cling to power for far too long, is a big part of the reason we are where we are now, I feel immense relief when I see Gen Z stepping up to the plate.

Liz Truss keeps digging her own grave. “In Bank Job, her preposterous book-length attempt to justify the policy – an attempt reminiscent of the worst sort of saloon-bar bore, ranting in a corner while other patrons realise it’s time to go home – Truss never concedes she was remotely at fault”.

Dutch blood bank Sanquin has stopped leaving out pink iced tarts to thank donors (and restore their blood sugar) after some people reportedly filled carrier bags with the sweet treats. So the cakes have been locked away and donors will have to ask for their reward from now on.
