Presenter, Radio Four’s Front Row and Start the Week.

I was grumbling this morning because I had to work on something for next week. But the "work" was watching Sandra Hueller in Markus Schleinzer's film Rose and it turned out to be nothing like work at all. Excellent film...and she's wonderful in it.

Caught up with Obsession last night. Smartly done horror touching on all kinds of nerves... sexual consent, male terror of intimacy, the nature of love. And not TOO scary. I didn't have to hide behind my wife once.

Not sure why I bother, but most accounts of Trump’s blatherings about Iran taking out LA and San Diego are misleading. Pretty clear from the video that “it’s a small price to pay” is a call back to his use of that term earlier in reference to fuel prices and the war.

Reminded of the headline we ran on the review of Jeffrey Archer’s first play after coming out of prison for perjury: “Archer’s back — with blemishes”. (Credit to Mark Lawson for that one).

In the light of recent events Crouch End Airsoft Society have decided to cancel our scheduled night paintballing exercise in Norfolk (r.v. RAF Lakenheath Viewing Area). Pass it on will you?

“I will not engage with the listicle, I will not engage with the listicle, I will not engage with the listicle….what the hell do you mean Peep Show is below Downton Abbey!!”

Reading this, which is grimly wonderful. Loved this passage in which an inveterate liar and bloviator, Tamkin, finds himself saying something true (or true for Bellow’s main character Wilhelm)

Now, Wilhelm, I'm trying to do you some good. I want to tell you, don't marry suffering. Some people do. They get married to it, and sleep and eat together, just as husband and wife. If they go with joy they think it's adultery.

I’m back on Start the Week on BBC Radio 4 at 9: Carlo Rovelli on philosophy and physics, Lavinia Greenlaw on difficulty in poetry, and James Graham’s new play about John Maynard Keynes. Stick that heady mix in yer podcast pipe. How lucky we are to have the BBC.

Today I experienced Swiss railway disruption due to work on the tracks. Honestly, “If Carlsberg did bus replacement services”. They even send you a little map so you know exactly where to find the bus.
