Throwback Thursday - Great Fosters, Egham In C11 this area reserved for king hunting ground & was rich with deer boar & fish & provided Windsor Castle with wood it needed. Originally the forest covered land stretching as far as Crouch Oak Addlestone #LocalHistory

#FridayFrocks – The #Pleating at the back of this transitional-style 1790s gown is designed to fit the garment snugly to the back of the wearer’s body. It was a new approach adopted by dressmakers attempting to accommodate the higher-waisted fashions of the time.

#ThrowbackThursday Wharton’s Boat House Yard Mead #Egham 1903 1887 John Wharton began boat building business here but died 1892 & it passed to wife Anne, who with their son Ernest, continued the family business. Fire in 1911 saw the Boat House destroyed with damages estimated at £1,000. #TBT

#ThrowbackThursday Burley Orchard, #Chertsey, 1989 This Gothic creation was built for William Anthony Herring, the Chertsey iron-founder, in 1875. It is full of ornamental ironwork & has a cast iron conservatory, all manufactured by Herring’s Foundry, Gogmore Lane. Now retirement residential units

Throwback Thursday - The Bridge at #NewHaw, c. 1960 1 of 12 locks along 15.5 miles of navigable waterway known as the Wey Navigation - all dug by hand. Navigation opened 1652 & cost £16,000. It was ground-breaking as largest & 1st commercially viable waterway in the country #TBT #LocalHistory

Throwback Thursday Caxton Ave #Addlestone c.1926 In 1924 Percival F. Jones bought land in Addlestone and built new mock-Tudor print factory and a total of 9 bungalows, such as these in the photograph, & 22 semi-detached houses were built for sale or rent for his workers. #localhistory #TBT

#ThrowbackThursday St Ann's Hill #Chertsey c1922 1334 Abbot of Chertsey John de Rutherwyk built chapel on summit of Oldbury Hill. It was dedicated to St. Anne & hill renamed. C15-C18 town fair held on the hill. Today it takes place on Abbeyfields & known as Black Cherry Fair! See you on Saturday!
