Orbán took power in April 2010. We organized our first protests against him that December. I was 22, in undergrad, lucky to be in a community of students ready to resist. Looking back, no wonder this moment feels so heavy. 🧵
Writing a book is having—and forgetting—the same epiphany over and over until you die or finish the book, whichever comes first.

There’s little weirder to me about this moment than seeing wired, the publication that for decades paved the road to US technofascism with their ridiculous propaganda of “tech optimism” & technolibertarianism, running articles like this. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they are—it’s just ironic as hell
The Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania mourns the passing of Monroe E. Price, J.D., retired Professor of Communication and a towering figure in the field of international communication:

Over the past 6 years, whenever Americans have faced a crisis – from the pandemic to weather emergencies to state violence – they have turned to grassroots solidarity to help each other. From the streets of Minneapolis to each and every neighborhood, mutual aid is here to stay. #mutualaid
in a system that tells us to get ours that tells us the american dream is success for yourself that people with money are the ones who’ve won mutual aid is a rejection of the core capitalist values we were supposed to learn mutual aid is interdependence and interdependence is how we’ll survive
It’s ironic that this is framed as being about “Giving Tuesday”, when so much of mutual aid is critical of this vertical model of charity, but this is a good article, with nice stories from activists, about the power of #mutualaid in these dark times. apnews.com/article/mutu...
When formal systems stop working, neighbors turn to each other in what many call 'mutual aid'
Organizers say that interest in local, grassroots initiatives to meet community needs has been growing.

Universities: - Stop offering workshops on how to use ChatGPT to write papers - stop using DeepL to translate your websites or make it sound useful for our research - stop pretending AI usage is inevitable. I don‘t want to work for institutions who can‘t employ critical thinking to new tech.
“university leaders … must act to help us collectively turn back the tide of garbage software, which fuels harmful tropes (e.g. so-called lazy students) and false frames (e.g. so-called efficiency or inevitability) to obtain market penetration and increase technological dependency” 3/🧵
