Isn’t it quite incredible what we have become: a country divided over a group of volunteers who risk their own lives to save others. This would have been unthinkable 10 years ago, but thanks to Nigel and others we are here. Shameful really

“In the store old men gathered, occupying for endless hours the creaking milkcases, speaking slowly and with conviction upon matters of profound inconsequence …”

Published 1935. Still setting the standard 2026. Page 1, a house, “Square, with a broken roof set at a single pitch, it leans in empty and shimmering dilapidation in the sunlight…”

Published in 1969, this is the Ur-text of environmental, ecological poetry, and contains a decent amount of native American thought/belief. Turtle Island = America Superb.

A slimline glimpse of Willy Vlautin (60 pages, a steady hour of reading), doing what he does best. The down-trodden, blue collar, just trying to make ends meet week to week… and all the while waiting on some kindness, some sign of hope. A verifiable treat

This book is fierce. It starts where Kelman usually leaves off. If it is standing at the abyss looking down, it takes your hand, jumps, and takes you with it. Recommended.
