I swear to God, part of the problem of literacy is that we make kids read SO MANY books like this. Of course they’re going to associate reading with misery! We put them in a Skinner box and shock them when they read, what did people THINK would happen?

Having ranted about school curriculum books, I’ve just seen my son’s summer reading list, and all I can say is “I was right”. A more depressing collection would be tricky to assemble. Are we actively trying to convey to kids the idea that reading is dismal and arduous?

Fae: “Tell us your true name.” Me: “…Just my name? No birthdate, no SSN, no fingerprint scan, no address, no mother’s maiden name? Are you sure you’ve even got the right Olivia Waite? There’s like six.” Fae: “What the hell kind of bargains have you been making?” Me: “They call it health insurance.”

It's pretty infuriating that Trump is denying disaster aid to Oregon for political reasons and I have barely heard anything about it, while Biden was falsely accused of doing the exact same thing to North Carolina and millions of people believed that

It’s Magic the Gathering night, and Stepkid just cast Mirror Form, which Kevin changed with Arcane Malfunction, giving Stepkid 13 1/1 bird tokens. STEPKID: Someday Mirror Form will work in my favor. ME: I don’t know what you’re complaining about, you have birds!

ME: I can’t find a single decent metal cover of Total Eclipse of the Heart. KEVIN: Yeah, they all go power ballad. ME: I’m not asking for a Cookie Monster growl on “turn around, bright eyes” but… ME: No, wait, that’s EXACTLY what I want. That would be awesome.

I have just learned that they make paddles that will leave a tire tread pattern on someone’s ass, and I have absolutely no idea what to do with this information so I’m sharing with y’all. If that’s your thing, great! But…err…exactly which thing is that?

What I love about this book is that it feels like a guy from a much grittier fantasy series (I have joked to @adamstemple.bsky.social it's a guy from one of his books) wakes up and finds himself in a comedic romance (albeit one with a much higher body count than you'd expect in a romance).

I bought a signed copy of T Kingfisher's Wolf Worm. A scientific illustrator is hired to help an entomologist with his book on parasitic insects in the post-Reconstruction South. Only, what happened to the previous illustrator? & why is the wildlife acting so weird? 💙📚 📚🪐 @tkingfisher.com

This is a beautiful cover! I very pretty plant is wound into the words of the title - only on second glance, it's unsettling. The roots are blood red, the curved stem has pupae & flies hanging down instead of flowers, & the 2 red flowers have pollen-bearing stamens that look like jaws full of teeth. Also, there's hornworm caterpillar clinging to the stem that has a dozen or more parasitic wasp eggs attached to it.
