92% of respondents rated the weekend 4 or 5 stars. The report covers attendance methodology, survey results, arrival mode, and preliminary business feedback. Fall watch parties resume in September. With support from the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture @seaofficeofarts
Here is what the data tells us. 75% of attendees arrived car-free, at an event with no parking.
During the championship final, the crowd filled the plaza and spilled into the closed street. We do not read that as a capacity failure. We read it as demand evidence. The U District needs more room for people, and it needs it at the station.
1,370 people. Two days. Zero parking spaces. Our report on July's World Soccer Fan Celebration at the square at U District Station is published. 75% of attendees arrived car-free. soccer.udistrict.org/report
A local shop owner opposes our Main Street becoming a pedestrian destination, and that it should remain ‘grab and go’ by car. This same business sponsors an annual weekend street closure to attract patrons but somehow misses the similarity of purpose.
Plante’s political insight was to frame pedestrianisation not as a sacrifice, but as economic development policy. Her argument was clear: a shopping street can either attract cars or people. It can't effectively do both. When shops can no longer compete on convenience, they must do it on experience.
Thank you to @mayor.seattle.gov for letting Lake Washington Boulevard better serve the community this summer. The boulevard is most accessible when it is closed to car through-traffic, and OPEN to people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to enjoy as the 3 mile public waterfront PARK it is

Come gather with neighbors to celebrate the treasure that lies beneath our feet - our public right-of-way. Thanks to our friends at Seattle Streets Alliance @streetsalliance.bsky.social for 15 years of successful advocacy! Making our city more inclusive, walkable, & joyful - one street at a time.
Once again: close an area to cars, business *increases*. Every time. And yet every new proposal to close an area to cars meets the same resistance from business owners. I'm starting to wonder whether business owners really are rational self-interest maximizers, I tell you!
Madrid closed its central business district to cars for the first time during the 2018 Christmas period. The result was a 9.5% increase in retail spending on Madrid’s main shopping street, the Gran Vía. Plus there was a 71% drop in air pollution. Via @carltonreid.com in @forbes.com. #UrbanTruth
The Transportation Committee just voted 5-0 to put Shared Streets into the city code, and I couldn’t be happier to vote yes! This represents an amazing opportunity to make our streets safer by giving priority to people, not cars, and by allowing us to lower the speed limit to 10 MPH.
The best way to anticipate future needs in our rapidly growing dense urban center? Try a pilot and survey those who show up.
May 30 and June 6, show up and show the city car-free spaces are in high demand!
