then they came for milo yiannopoulos, and i was busy that day so i waited until they came for someone else to complain, although i objected to it in theory
There is currently a Wikipedia edit war on the Great Lakes Wikipedia pages because everything is so stupid
Don't cite the deep magic to me, witch. I straight-up don't remember writing that shit. I don't know how it runs when it calls on a non-existent .txt called deepmmagic. Yeah two Ms I missed it. And yes I know it always crashes to desktop on exit. No I won't help you mod it for "deeper magic"
if you tell me "A is a bully on social media(/in print, in whatever specific scenario) but very pleasant elsewhere" you are roughly 50x likelier to convince me that they have the additional vice of cowardice than you are to convince me that they have a hidden virtue of kindness
One of the things us an industry need to stop doing is perpetuating the 'they say this on social media, but they're a sweetheart in real life' about awful people I've had other journos say this to me about some of the most pernicious grifters over the years, some of who crossed many lines this week

Which is a very dangerous thing to do, when paired with elaborate mental gymnastics to target structurally oppressed groups by redefining them as dominant or focusing on an otherwise dominant subset E.g.: - white Jews - male autists - white women - black men - male victims of SA - AMAB trans women
I am getting really sick of explaining to people that just because, for instance, racism is bigotry plus direction of structural oppression, that bigotry is evil in its own right. A lot of people think this definition means bigotry against higher status groups is ok.
This is half right. Academia was about inquiry when I went to school, but before and after that, unfortunately, it was finishing school for elites
Basic contention is academia used to be about inquiry, and not just a finishing school for elites as it is nowadays. But my impression is academia has always been to a large extent a finishing school for elites and by historical standards there's an unusually high emphasis on intellectual merit now?
If you say this on BlueSky they arrest you
It's a joke, please stop explaining
Anyway it's definitely Twitter that is cooking brains, and only Twitter, and definitely not any other very similar site that is even more of a social pressure cooker, that people spend an equivalent amount of time on, with an even-more tightly delineated set of social and ideological expectations.
Jason Arday sounds like he sucks, but I'm sorry I'm simply incapable of feeling sorry for a student who complained about getting a 70 rather than a 75. www.lbc.co.uk/article/jaso...

Former Cambridge professor Jason Arday accused a student of 'white privilege' after she questioned her grades, it has been claimed.

I think I am developing a contemptuous disregard for Populism writ large. It's far worse in its right wing version but I actually extremely dislike the left wing version too. I have enough hate in my heart for multiple things.

Idk how many of these AI-generated math proofs will hold up, but it definitely feels like something has gone critical in the last 72 hours or so.
There is a lot to say about the Nolan Odyssey movie. But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.
I just saw a meme that said “get in losers, we’re reclaiming the emdash”. People. PEOPLE. Where are your STANDARDS? It CLEARLY should be “get in, losers — we’re reclaiming the em dash.”
Throwing my hat into the "psychoanalyze WTF Anthropic is doing" ring: These are all uber-nerds who sincerely wanted to figure out safe AI and didn't really care about anything else, but who have unexpectedly found themselves running a multi-billion dollar corporation without any idea how to do that.
We're extending Claude Fable 5 access on all paid plans, as well as keeping Claude Code’s weekly rate limits 50% higher, through July 19.
1/2) Please let's all remember that GWT is a theoy of access consciousness (what is available for verbal reasoning) and not phenomenal consciousness (subjective experience): philpapers.org/rec/BLOOAC Obviously, in this study access consciousness is literally what they test in the LLMs. #NeuroAI 🧪

The way AI-antis talk about "The Bubble Popping" is starting to sound like the way that QAnon people talk about "The Storm": an overwhelming event of such magnitude that it becomes impossible for anyone to deny that "they were right." It's a myth of emotional catharsis and unambiguous validation.
I basically agree with this, with one amendment: the problem isn’t that there isn’t any incentive for smart people to get into politics, but ther there isn’t any incentive to think about things. In our populist moment, the truth is always already known, the correct policy has already been decided.
One of the more dispiriting things about the last decade of politics, and especially the last 2 years, is that there is no incentive to get into politics if you’re smart. There is widespread hostility to intelligence, nuance, and reason. It’s slopulism all the way down. And we know where it ends.
Compromising in the culture war by saying "her schlong" whenever one might otherwise have said "her penis". It may be crude but this is how we can live together in a liberal democracy.
Breaking - Michael Deacon of the telegraph issues ‘everyone stop saying ‘her penis’’ challenge …
This is a sound take. Also you almost surely do not sufficiently hate the media
What I really think is good is widely dispersed decision making power and egalitarian means of information aggregation. This pushes me towards some kinda democratic market socialism since concentrations of power in the hands of capitalists or planning bureaus is bad. It also makes me hate the media.
My paper modelling and simulating meditative deconstruction via letting go is now out open access in Neural Computation at @mitpress.bsky.social 🧠 I show how the phenomenology of experiential deconstruction (defabrication) naturally emerges from the dynamics of hierarchical active inference. 🧵

Social intelligence Arises Between Minds
We've built brilliant solitary thinkers. But recent neuroscience results hint that real intelligence emerges between minds, and AI has never been coupled with one.

I am the last true Free Speech Warrior in that I basically hate Hasan Piker and Cenk Uygur but don't think they should have been banned from coming to the UK. Same re Kanye West. These people are valueless simpletons who make our culture and country worse with every utterance, but so it goes.
