In my linguistics class, they told us that English is 40% German, 40% French, 10% Latin and Greek, 10% Scandinavian (from the Vikings, you know), and 10% use words borrowed from other languages due to colonization (eg, curry, bungalow). Yes, that adds up to 110% — which is the point.

Today is my mother’s birthday — 25. July, 1933 — and she would have been 93 if she hadn’t died of cancer at age 45. As Sandra Boynton illustrates, there are many other things to celebrate today:
