I am happy to share that my postdoctoral work in the @gerlichlab.bsky.social at @imbavienna.bsky.social is finally out 🎉! Our study reveals how cohesin guides focused and accurate homology search. Read more 👉 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... Follow along for key insights and updates! 🧵
Cohesin guides homology search during DNA repair using loops and sister chromatid linkages
Accurate repair of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) is essential for genome stability, and defective repair underlies diseases such as cancer. Homologous recombination uses an intact homologous sequenc...

been lurking here a while but time to spend less time in the bad place Here's my latest work in collab w/ Viraat Goel, @andersshansen.bsky.social, Leonid Mirny, Nick Aboreden, Gerd Blobel et al. Dynamics of microcompartment formation at the mitosis-to-G1 transition www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
We found a new asymmetry in the large-scale chromosome structure: sister chromatids are systematically shifted by hundreds of kb in the 5′→3′ direction of their inherited strands! The work was led by Flavia Corsi, in close collaboration with the Daniel Gerlich lab. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... 1/
Learn how the teams from @ninacabezas.bsky.social and our MPI-IE metabolomics facility created a metabolism map of healthy, old and cancerous HSCs. Great podcast episode. ⬇️🎧
This week: the #metabolomics of HSPCs! A new @natcellbio.nature.com study from Drs. Marialena Lalioti, Mari Carmen Romero-Mulero, Joerg Buescher, and @ninacabezas.bsky.social identifies metabolic changes that occur with differentiation, aging, and #AML. 📝- go.nature.com/4kOZVLX 🎧- bit.ly/3IGfUP1

Off-pore Nup98 condensates mobilize heterochromatic breaks and exclude Rad51
Merigliano et al. identified a non-canonical, “off-pore” role for nucleoporins in genome stability and in the spatial regulation of homologous recombination in multicellular eukaryotes. Nup98 condensates form at DNA breaks within pericentromeric heterochromatin to prevent aberrant recombination by excluding Rad51, while promoting the mobilization of repair sites through immiscibility with heterochromatin protein 1 (HP1) condensates.
