The group stage has ended and the reviews are in. I joined other elected officials and our local organizing committee today to announce the news: Seattle and Washington state have been the absolute best destination for the World Cup.
Last Friday the USMNT played Australia here and it was an incredible opportunity for Seattle to showcase its revamped waterfront. I caught up with some fans in town for the World Cup who shared some of their favorites. The USMNT play Türkiye tonight @ 7
We may be the only host city where you can watch World Cup matches on a barge. Seattle is, and always has been, a maritime city and a big thank you to Friends of the Waterfront, Seattle Sounders, and Seattle Reign for showing off our waterfront to the world.
Soccer House at Pacific Place will be a fun place to catch World Cup game. The many activations, watch parties, and celebrations means we get to show off the magic that is Seattle. A big thank you to the workers and leaders for all of their work for this opportunity to share the PNW w/the world.

On Tuesday, the Port Commission will consider an order to strengthen civil rights protections and restrict use of port property for immigration enforcement purposes. We must do everything we can to stop this administration from reenacting the abuses of our past.
The SCOTUS tariff decision undoes bad policy that has hurt families and small businesses. AND, it is an assertion of both judicial and legislative branch powers (SCOTUS‘ final say on constitutionality and Congress’ power to set tax policy). Win-Win!

Today, I took the gavel (literally) as Commission President to lead the Port of Seattle. As we look at 2026, our focus must be on resilience, equity, and preparation. Before I share priorities for the year, I want to thank Commissioner Hasegawa for her visionary leadership over the past year.
Venezuela needs investment in civic infrastructure: education, media, community centers, job training—everything that ensures broad-based well-being. Instead, the administration is focused on rebuilding extractive oil infrastructure, ignoring the everyday needs of Venezuelans.
From 2001 to 2003, I lived in Colombia as part of a team documenting the results of US foreign policy in the Andes, and for the last eight years I’ve served as a commissioner at the Port of Seattle. My perspective on the capture of Maduro is based on those experiences. A few thoughts:
