Learned today that my public institution in a red state will no longer offer courses in biblical studies after this term. It's a weird feeling. Several of the legislators who created this odd environment for higher ed won't stop talking about how students need to study great texts. But, here we are.

The absolute disdain this man has for faculty is so obvious throughout this interview. Solidarity with my former colleagues in Ohio who continue to deal with the fallout of his wrath. 🫤
More than any Chronicle of Higher Education profile of a professor who doesn't like academia, I think this interview is the one I'd recommend to understand where higher education is at in the United States www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

Updated draft: In June 2022, the Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court decision overturned Roe v. Wade, sending abortion regulation back to states. Within months, bans were enforced in some states while others expanded protections. I study how these bans affected the practice locations of OBGYNs. 🧵

There was a plan to teach classes outside today at Miami as part of an attempt to make faculty labor more visible but the administration freaked out claiming that this was basically a strike and so illegal under Ohio law. www.yahoo.com/news/politic...

***NEWLY ACCEPTED PAPER*** I have a new short paper with Margaret Leighton We use decades of data (HERI) on incoming college freshmen to show that students' life goals have changed dramatically over time. Students really are very different than they were in the past! Here are the key findings:
I really enjoyed seeing Josh present this paper at #NBERSI2026 Although the paper is about private tutoring, I think it has huge implications for public school accountability systems and how families make residential choices based on school ratings such as those from Great Schools.
🚨New working paper alert!🚨 Private tutoring chains like Kumon and Sylvan have grown rapidly. Who uses them? Do they improve kids' skills? BU econ PhD student Samuel Nitkin and I provide answers in: "Kumon Up: Private Tutoring Centers and Student Achievement" www.nber.org/papers/w35671 1/?
Interesting new paper by @joshua-goodman.com and Samuel Nitkin on private tutoring - it raises test scores, but because of differences in adoption it also raises inequality in test scores. Full paper here: www.nber.org/papers/w35671
"AI is disrupting education but that's happened before. We adapted to the Internet, calculators, etc" Yeah but you didn't have students who thought that calculators were the end of everything while others thought that they'd use the calculator to get super wealthy overnight.

The new H-1B tax will be announced tomorrow. The original $100K tax was ruled illegal in court. The White House has cooked up its successor: a $103K tax on *all* private sector H-1Bs. Much more drastic than the original: NO EXCEPTION for people already in the US (like grads of US universities)—>
