Today I commiserated with a student about reactions to their research presentation as being nothing new and only what people already know. People said the exact same thing to me when I was a Ph.D. student (and afterwards). Like, this means it is good, accurate research? This is the point!

I am so fed up with having AI rammed down my throat. I don‘t want any of it. I don’t want your stupid machine thinking for me. I don’t want it chewing things up and spitting out idiot goo that purports to be efficient. I don’t want the theft and corrosion of everything original there is. Eff off.

“Use AI to brainstorm but not to write.” “Use AI to help you outline but not to write.” These are commonly proposed as “ethical” ways for undergrad students to use AI, but I’m sorry, brainstorming & outlining are just as integral to writing as the actual construction of sentences.
Yes. All of that has a purpose. And we're teaching students they don't but also that their own brains don't need to develop those skills.
