🦅Soaring across migration routes called flyways, billions of birds cross deserts, mountains and oceans during migration. 🦆To survive these incredible journeys, migratory birds rely on an interconnected network of habitats, including wetlands, which provide places to rest and feed along the way.

Natural hazards continue to cause significant loss of life and have social and economic consequences. Investing in resilience means investing in nature. Protecting wetlands can help reduce disaster risk by providing natural buffers against floods, storms and other climate related hazards.

Researchers at @iiasa.ac.at and partners have developed a new Climate Impact Taxonomy, connecting climate hazards such as extreme heat, drought, and flooding with risks to ecosystems and human well-being. Explore the Climate Impact Taxonomy: iiasa.ac.at/news/aug-202...

What does the wise use of wetlands actually mean? The Convention defines the wise use of wetlands as “the maintenance of their ecological character, achieved through the implementation of ecosystem approaches, within the context of sustainable development”.

The #GlobalFlywaysSummit, which follows immediately after the Global Partnership Meeting, brings together finance and business partners, and national and multilateral government agencies to advance innovative and integrated approaches to regional conservation collaboration.

🌍 Nearly 40% of the world’s land is degraded. ⚽Using football pitches to put the scale into perspective, @unep.org shows how big the challenge is and what can be done to restore our planet’s land. Read more: www.unep.org/news-and-sto...

Earth has two football pitches of land for every human. Much of it is ailing.

Climate change and destructive practices, like deforestation and agricultural sprawl, have left 40 per cent of Earth’s land degraded.

By building strong partnerships across sectors and at all levels, we can accelerate the conservation and restoration of wetlands and safeguard the benefits they provide for people, nature and a resilient future. Together, we can turn shared responsibility into collective action for wetlands.

🏝️ Across the Caribbean, wetlands are more than ecosystems; they are livelihoods. 💬 “When you know the value of mangroves, you actually want to protect them but it’s also part of your livelihood, so you owe it to yourself to protect your livelihood too.” @iki-germany.bsky.social

#UNCCDCOP17: At the high-level session “From Victoria Falls to Ulaanbaatar: wetlands as the heart of integrated land and water resilience”, one message came through loud and clear: we cannot tackle drought and land degradation without healthy wetlands.

#WorldWaterWeek2026: Many serious issues facing the world can be traced back to degrading landscapes. If climate change, biodiversity loss, and food security are to be tackled at source, then landscape restoration and conservation must be at the center of the solution.

Marea Verde Panama and The Ocean Cleanup have joined forces to launch the Siete Cuencas Project, an innovative initiative that seeks to significantly reduce the waste that reaches the Bay of Panama, a #RamsarSite, through the capital's rivers.

This year’s #WorldWaterWeek theme, “Water for People and Progress”, reminds us that tackling some of the greatest challenges of our time often starts with water. Wetlands supply nearly all of the world’s freshwater, and restoring them means protecting the water that sustains people and nature.
