I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

I will never stop being aghast that the United States built a higher education system that was literally the envy of the entire world—our bitterest political enemies nonetheless sent their children to us to be educated, it was so good—& then just decided to systematically, ruthlessly dismantle it

who is the audience for AI-generated literature? novels, poetry, nonfiction? who is actually *asking* for this? (I don’t mean the stuff that writes your work emails or meal plans, also ethically nightmarish but I can at least picture a human being wanting such a thing—even if we shouldn’t)
