Inupiaq, scientist of host-microbe interactions, mom, runner, news junkie, not necessarily in that order. I speak for myself. She/her. Only reskeets posts with alt text. Unapologetically typo prone, doesn't use AI.

I took 2 weeks off to bury my parents ashes (died in 2025 & 2021), to be with ancestors, & to spend time with Caleb Scholar's peeps (we give fellowships & mentoring to students from our region who use their degrees to protect our ways of life) & I feel fricking guilty. Fricking US hustle culture.

Huh, interesting. This article briefly mentions the “unauthorized Spanish slaving expeditions against Lipan Apache communities” that occurred in the 1700s. Two of my ancestors were documented as enslaved (a woman and her son); IMO likely as a result of such expeditions. Tbh, I need to learn more.

I get a lot of people asking for sources about the Lipan Apache in Texas and our history; the Texas State Historical Society just published a thorough, peer-reviewed article on the subject! www.tshaonline.org/handbook/ent...

I travel a bit and one thing I've started doing: taking cabs/taxis instead of rideshares. The drivers are paid better and more consistently, the cars are usually comparable, and importantly, the taxis are often cheaper*, especially from the airport. *YMMV, ofc

Utah's national treasures aren't easy to photograph in mid-day sun, with wildfire haze and a cell phone camera but I did my best. Fun to mess with filters too. Breaks my heart to see our national parks and monuments treated so poorly by the current admin.

Without basic research, translational and applied research grind to a halt. We don't know what any given discoveries might be useful for in the future, but that doesn't mean we should limit research to studies that have a clear pathway to applicability.

"hmm maybe this whole Arday affair shows that we need to have a Serious Conversation about whether Woke 1.0 overreached in manner X, Y, of Z" motherfucker you are generally in Fascism 487.0, as is this particular affair you're talking about. worry about *that*. /Final

Actually, one more - I feel like I should say this directly, so here goes. In the 90s and 00s, the groups I remember pursuing this strategy (hyperpublicize mugshots, Black crime statistics, etc) were Stormfront, the Klan, etc. Now it's the New York Times and the Telegraph. That is the story here.

When people were told "syphilis and tuberculosis are more prevalent among Black people", they didn't hear "immunity rates are lower in populations where the diseases are more novel" (what Woodson regards as the correct explanation), they heard confirmation of stereotypes already in circulation 5/

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

This is the coverage of Arday **just in the Telegraph** in the UK. This is only the first four pages of results, just in one outlet.

I am sitting on my parents front steps, listening to the waves, on the third to last morning in Kotzebue for this trip. I am already starting to feel the dread of leaving, so instead I am trying to focus on how close I feel to my ancestors and the waters. I miss this view every day that I am outside
