Going to SBL in Denver? On Monday afternoon, I will argue that m. Shabbat 1 (the first chapter in tractate Shabbat from the Mishnah) formulates Sabbath halakha by thinking with enslaved labor while simultaneously obscuring these workers. A few test cases from the chapter will be presented.

Quietly amazing BL discovery: when I went to iiif.bl.uk/uv/#?manifes... this morning to grab images of its evangelist portraits for a talk next week, I discovered that the IIIF viewer now shows a download icon at the lower left of the screen! For this MS, it allows download of a hi-res image!

Slavery was and is a real thing that has brutalized hundreds of millions of people over the course of human history, if someone tells me a fucking chatbot is enslaved I'm immediately throwing hands. It's not cute, it's not intriguing, it's an insult to real people who suffered and suffer now.
