The sound of his phone woke him. Tseng blinked into the darkness, then turned his head to take in the numbers on the clock.

2.49am.

Irritation leaked through as he answered the call, despite his best efforts. “Would you consider calling during the day?”

“Why, did I disturb your beauty sleep?” There was something off about Reno’s voice. It was slower; the nasal quality more noticeable, the consonants carefully enunciated. The overcompensation of someone trying not to slur.

“You’re drunk.”

A silence, before Reno said, sullenly, “I had a couple drinks.”

Tseng rubbed sleep from his eyes, and sat up. “Are you in a secure location? Nobody can overhear you?”

Hypers stopped you from dreaming. He’d forgotten how disorientating it felt, waking up from something like that.

Was it messed up, to dream about Arnaud? He was pretty sure it was messed up. It wasn’t just that Arnaud was dead. Arnaud had been his friend. Probably his best friend. You weren’t supposed to want to fuck your friends.

There had been that one weird thing between them, and then Arnaud hadn’t mentioned it again, so Reno hadn’t either. And now Arnaud was dead and everything they’d never talked about had been left to dangle, questions with no answers, like the broken chords of an unfinished song…

The Tank looked exactly the way he had left it. So much had happened in the past two days that part of him had expected it to have collapsed into a pile of dust while he’d been gone. But no, there it stood, like he’d never been away, with Doughnut out front on the breeze block, smoking a joint and eating dumplings from a takeout container.

“I thought you went to Sector 7,” Doughnut said, when he saw Reno.

“I thought you fucked off to your Aunt’s for a week.”

“I came back.” For a second Doughnut looked tired, and older than he normally did. “You know the Turks did come by? They spoke to Bear. He’s super mad at you.”

Reno had been sitting on the mattress, curled into a ball with his arms wrapped around his knees, but he raised his head at the sound. He didn’t look like he had slept—there were dark shadows under his eyes—but he grinned when he saw Tseng. Sharp. Unfriendly.

Chapter 2: Turks, like death, are inevitable

Depending on who asked him, and how he was feeling at the time, Reno would tell different stories about who he had been prior to turning up in Sector 2.

For example, there was Reno the Badass, who had been carefully designed to impress the guys he worked with. Recruited at a young age into a Wall Market gang—improbably young, but nobody ever pressed for details—he had risen swiftly through the ranks. Defending the gang turf with fearsome brutality, he had accrued a string of vicious murders to his name. Cut a guy’s tongue out once, Reno would say. He won’t talk smack about me again.

Reno the Badass had lived a life dripping in notoriety, bling, and pussy, right up until the day he crossed the Don himself and had to leave everything behind. But. Reno would roll out his shoulders, give a slow grin that showed his teeth. One day I’m gonna go back. Make the Don pay. Take over the whole fucking Market. Just you watch me.

every time i open ec to do my dailies it's just sadness. genuinely enjoyed the game, despite the gacha parts. there's so much love put into the outfits and art, plus it was a way to finally get a lot more lore outside of the mainline game(s) wish they coulda come up with a soft relaunch instead 😭
