Stunning new financial analysis from @desmog.com. During a year when gas prices skyrocketed for regular Canadians, oil executives personally raked in over $1 billion worth of stock holdings increases. "Angry yet?" writes @manderson98.bsky.social www.desmog.com/2026/08/27/c...

An excellent read! ✊ "That is the contradiction Carney needs to confront. The whole point of an east-west electricity grid is to increase competition and interconnection. His MOU with Alberta is fuelling an AI gas build-out whose beneficiaries have a strong incentive to resist this laudable effort"

NEW: Mark Carney's government recently announced a national electricity strategy, but it is undermined by Carney's support for gas-burning data centres. Read Mitchell Anderson's analysis: buff.ly/4RQ0FYb

From Saudi to Canada, the main point of the AI industry is to keep the oil industry alive: "Nearly a hundred data-centre projects are in the works across Canada...The AI build-out is essentially a machine for manufacturing new long-term demand for natural gas."

Excellent work by @zoeyunker.bsky.social for The Tyee. This complements previous analysis by Thomas Gunton at SFU on inadequate pipeline tolls. Why should taxpayers shell out for a new pipeline when highly profitable companies don't want to help cover the cost for the last one?

Zoë Yunker@zoeyunker.bsky.social · 3w ago

As Canada plans another publicly-owned oil pipeline to BC's coast, it has quietly reached a settlement with oil companies to lower their fees on Trans Mountain. Those fees already didn't pay for the cost of building the line. 🛢️ My latest for @thetyee.ca

Mark Carney has been playing up protecting Canada’s energy sovereignty by expanding fossil fuel extraction. But who owns the oil patch? US capital controls the majority of oil and gas companies operating in Canada and American ownership of Canadian oil is increasing. www.desmog.com/2025/12/16/m...

Mark Carney Claims Fossil Fuel Expansion Is ‘Canada Strong,’ but U.S. Investors Get the Profits

New data show American capital now controls most of Canada’s oil and gas sector while jobs vanish, royalties lag, and billions flow south.

www.desmog.com/2025/10/29/w... Premier Smith’s single-minded fixation on the oil and gas industry has left her province dangerously dependent on cyclical royalty revenue, soon to be clobbered by a global oil glut and waning demand. Alberta's students and teachers deserve better.

What Is Alberta’s Oil Wealth Paying for? Not Better Education

Production is up. Jobs are down. And the province is dead last on per-student funding. That’s not what prosperity is supposed to look like.
