Not targeting the individual nor initiate a pile-on, because I’m sympathetic to the sentiment. But I think it’s an opportunity to ask how we might respond if we recognised that these are not somnambulant steps, but are in fact deliberate decisions made by very conscious and educated individuals?

Thinking back on the Reform UK conference, one of the big impressions it left was *cosiness*. This sounds odd given the rhetoric, but it reminded me of some Tory conferences and Labour under Corbyn, where it was often a comfort blanket for members, with no beliefs or failures really challenged.

"I don't recognise my country anymore" used to be the cry of sunburned right wing emigrants. Now I'm looking at hundreds of people blocking coaches of saved refugees in the city I was born in, and I don't think the country that was mine even exists any more. It's gone, it's not coming back.

Apologies to believers in a Burnham Restoration of Labour, but any UK party which demonstrates, through its own actions, that it remains invested in the deeply ideological positions that sympathy for Palestinians is a fiction while violent hatred of migrants is organic and legitimate is NGMI.

You will note that the govt has never assumed this tone nor approach to advocates for Palestinian rights and humanity, nor critics of Israel and its designs on the West Bank, despite the fact that we all, too, are deeply concerned about events in Israel, and committed to a two-state solution.
