Wandering Glimmers | Loree Ovens | Opening Reception Tomorrow at Propeller Art Gallery, one of the oldest artist-run galleries in Toronto, Canada | propellerartgallery.com/exhibitions/...

September 30 – October 18, 2026 | Opening Reception: Saturday, Oct. 3, 2 – 5 pm | Artist present Saturdays and Sundays during the exhibition | I have always focused on creating uplifting works in hopes of generating more meaningful connections. With this body of work, I challenged myself to work on concepts around personal boundaries, energy and my own sense of peace. Wandering Glimmers is a collection of fleeting moments of peace or joy found through daily living. Coined by clinical social worker Deb Dana, “glimmers” are micro-moments of everyday experiences that give the feeling of connection, calm and happiness. Glimmers are everywhere, and everyone experiences them differently. They are quiet, serendipitous and often unpredictable. These moments can drift in and out of your day naturally. It could be as simple as holding a warm cup of tea, watching sunlight reflected on a window or witnessing a random act of kindness. Glimmers help ground you by shifting your perspective and bringing you to the present. This quiet mindfulness practice speaks of resilience and of not losing your sense of wonder and curiosity in difficult times. Finding light when you least expect it.

ALL THE LIVING THINGS | Tracy Thomson | Opening Reception Tomorrow at Propeller Art Gallery, one of the oldest artist-run galleries in Toronto, Canada | propellerartgallery.com/exhibitions/...

September 30 – October 18, 2026 | Opening Reception: Saturday, Oct. 3, 2 – 5 pm | This body of work reflects not only the natural elements but human as well. Considering the obvious…You can’t have one without the other !! We are—all of us, predator and prey alike. Intertwined in a constant dance of celebration, survival, curiosity, love, envy, hate, danger, destruction and unpredictable consequence. All of this and more, enters my work. Thankfully, not all at once; rather, it sneaks in, unbeknownst to me, as I build my reconstructions—images magically appear! My subconscious thoughts become visibly apparent. Sometimes I think..Ewww, I should take that out, it’s too disturbing.. but now I take nothing out. If it appears, it’s meant to be. I let the chips fall where they may because…that’s life!! “In nature, nothing exists alone…All the life of the planet is interrelated of necessity” ~Rachel Carson

Open until 9 pm on Thursday, September 24th for Canadian Art Hop | Artist Talk: Sunday, September 27, 2:30 – 3:30 pm | I am an inveterate, unrepentant trashure collector! (Trashure = trash + treasure). The pieces in this show have been chosen to show a variety of junk I have collected over the years…trashures to me😊 My challenge was to breathe new life into material that was headed to the trash bin. A trashure may sit in my collection for years or just days before inspiring me to give it a second or third purpose in life. Needless to say, I am constrained by my trashure palette, but therein lies the creative challenge as I play, explore, and experiment. I have so much fun dreaming up how to use these things. The underlying themes I wish to explore have to do with my feelings about the wasteful climate-changing habits encouraged by our consumer society. However….making art with this stuff does give me an outlet to express my personal struggles and joys, and provides some respite from the anxieties of modern living in these troubled times. I hope that my work might inspire visitors to consider how to reuse materials in their own homes before chucking them out.

Continuing at Propeller Art Gallery, one of the oldest artist-run galleries in Toronto, Canada | Capturing the Curve | Peter Shoebridge | propellerartgallery.com/exhibitions/...

My work explores the intersection of form and line—between the three-dimensional presence of shape and the quiet precision of the two-dimensional mark. I am drawn to the curve as a gesture that holds both movement and stillness, revealing how the simplest juxtapositions can evoke emotion, suggest a narrative, and define a moment. Through the dialogue between volume and contour, I seek to create spaces where meaning emerges not from complexity, but from the subtle tension and harmony of relationships.

Continuing at Propeller Art Gallery, one of the oldest artist-run galleries in Toronto, Canada | Imaginary Truths | Kate Hawkins | propellerartgallery.com/exhibitions/...

Imaginary Truths is a collection of drawings and prints that invites us to consider reality and its reinvention, to ask ourselves what is truth? Does it even exist? Does it differ from perception? Is it relative or absolute? Poetic or palpable? Obvious or subtle? Fixed or elusive? Should we hold onto it tightly or let it go, along with everything else that we think we know? How does truth come to us? Is it discoverable in the realms of dreams and lyricism or has it more definite origins? Many of the pieces in this exhibition draw on myth and story to describe what, for me, ultimately remains ineffable. Truth’s Journey, a series of 12 prints, portrays an imaginary adventure in which Truth, guided by Compassion, is dissolved and reforged by the forces of Nature. Arrivederci, Michelangelo, Ciao, a series of 6 drawings, describes a transformational dream that incited an enduring quest for artistic authenticity and freedom. Medieval Ladies, a series of 14 discs, is cast in an era quite distant from our own but describes layers of truth and fantasy that may feel strangely familiar in contemporary society. But Aren’t We All Wounded Butterflies? depicts a vision, a moment of illumination that came to me from the natural world unbidden and unexpectedly. And finally, Kate Through the Looking Glass and Betulla, two self-portraits and a mask, are attempts to describe the truth of my own self-imaginings.

Annual Guest Curated Exhibition | Curated by Nancy Jacobi | July 8 – 26, 2026 | 2 People’s Choice Awards sponsored by the Japanese Paper Place to be presented at 2 pm before the Artist Talks on Sunday, July 26, 2 pm | “Looks Good on Paper…” Curatorial essay by Nancy Jacobi | Draw, paint, print, dye, Bind, tear, cut, fly. Paste, sculpt, stitch, mold, Wrap, light, hang, fold. The possibilities of paper in the creative human hand are endless. Considering the decline in our daily use of paper, our jury of three (Nancy Jacobi, Susan Low-Beer and George A. Walker) was amazed to hear that a whopping 225 works had been submitted for the exhibition “Looks Good on Paper….” at Propeller Art Gallery! As hand-written letters, bus transfers, theatre tickets, menus, newspapers, currency, holiday cards and parking tickets gradually surrender to the promise of technology, are we losing the tactile sensitivity of our hands? Are we panicking as we fear the ultimate disappearance of this ubiquitous material so familiar to our touch? Is that why so many responded to this call to pay close attention to the choosing of a paper, that its demise is near? Or are we becoming increasingly aware of the widely interesting choice of paper for artistic use, often more ecologically sound and much more expressive. Recovering from the surprise of the volume of entries that lay before us to be juried, we were delighted to review them one by one. A wide range of chosen “paper” included classic Stonehenge and Arches drawing and watercolour papers, photo and magazine paper, Canadian St. Armand flax and cotton, Yunlong Xuan from China, hanji from Korea, cardboard, various Japanese papers, vintage and cancelled postage stamps, dyed Canson, somegami and chiyogami with its tiny patterns.

Opening Reception Tonight! | “Looks Good on Paper…” | Guest curated by Nancy Jacobi | Annual Guest Curated Exhibition | propellerartgallery.com/exhibitions/...

“Looks Good on Paper…” | Considering the decline in our daily use of paper, both for functional and artistic purposes, our jury of three (Nancy Jacobi, Susan Low-Beer and George A. Walker) was surprised to hear that 225 works had been submitted for the exhibition “Looks Good on Paper…” at Propeller Art Gallery.
We were delighted to review the entries and see the wide range of “paper” and inventive applications in the submissions. The call asked for works that would celebrate the “diverse and often unsung creative potential” of paper. Artists were encouraged to choose paper carefully to enhance their artwork. The resulting 48 pieces selected did all of this.
We are grateful for all the submissions, as each entry demonstrated excellent craftsmanship and creative exploration, even if not all could not be ultimately selected. The show celebrates the richness of paper as a medium and the inventive ways artists are redefining its possibilities.
